George Parfitt - Editor add to cart view cart Book: Paperback Perhaps no seventeenth-century poet apart from Donne has exerted a greater formative influence on English poetry than Ben Jonson. His adoption of classical ideals was combined with a vigorous interest in contemporary life and a strong faith in native idiom. Within the urbane elegance of his verse forms he contrived a directness and energy of statement clearly related to colloquial speech, and this characteristic fusion of restraint and vitality gave to the seventeenth-century lyric its most distinctive quality. As well as the entire body of Jonson's non-dramatic verse, extensively annotated, this edition contains many of the songs from his plays and masques and his translation of 'Horace, of the Art of Poetry' . His 'Conversations with Drummond' , which adds much to our sense of the man, appears as an Appendix, as does 'Discoveries' ; together they shed valuable light on Jonson's poetic theory and practice.

E. Prothero in preparing the Life and Correspondence of Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (2 vols., London, 1894). BRADSHAW, WILLIAM: Puritan; b. at Market Bosworth (12 m. w. of Leicester), Leicestershire, 1571; d. at Chelsea 1618. He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and became fellow of Sidney Sussex College in 1599; took orders but never received a living owing to his Puritan principles, and spent much of his time in retirement in Derbyshire, whence he made many journeys in behalf of the cause to which he was devoted. His chief work was English Puritanism: containing the main opinions of the rigid sort of those that are called Puritans in the Realm of England History of the Puritans, part ii, chap. i). The main point of his system was that he would subject no congregation to any ecclesiastical jurisdiction "save that which is within itself." He would have the members delegate their powers to pastors and elders, retaining that of excommunication. No clergyman should hold civil office. He was strongly opposed to "ceremonies." He was not a separatist and held that the king as "the archbishop and general overseer of all the churches within his dominions" had the right to rule and must not be resisted except passively. He published many other works and tracts, most of them anonymously.

John Lodge Cowley (1719-1787?) was a fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, near London, for a period of several years between 1761 and 1773. Known as "The Shop," the Royal Military Academy was one of the new and practical national academies that began to spring up around 1750 in England and on the Continent. These academies exemplified the shift from private science to public science, and their curricula emphasized applied sciences. Indeed the Royal Military Academy was established to improve the quality of the English military, and mathematics was an important part of the curriculum. Here is a description of the duties of the Professor of Mathematics during the time Cowley taught at "The Shop": The Professor of Mathematics shall teach the principles of arithmetic, algebra, the elements of geometry, the mensuration of superficies and solids, plane trigonometry, the elements of conic sections, and the theory of perspective, as also geography and the use of the globes.( It is not surprising to find that Cowley was interested in applied mathematics, especially solid geometry, and that his textbooks had practical applications and were widely used, surely at "The Shop," and elsewhere. The titles of his books closely reflect the subjects he taught. (
