Last week I was in Verona for a few hours. I went there to meet George Battistoni. A seller of oriental carpets and a man who has studied the Jewish literary and intellectual circles of Dante's time. The meeting was a delight. Unlike your average academic, with time limited by lectures and bureaucratic tasks, Mr Battistoni sits in the back office of his shop, surrounded by carpets and kilims, and has all the time in the world for conversation.
