John Mark Ministries Priscillas Friends WWW Devotion Remembering An Astronaut Who Sang Religion in Daily Life By the Rev. Edward Chinn, D.Min. Sunday, 9 February 2003 http://www.allsaintstorresdale.org "I just really love music, and I love singing," said Space Shuttle Columbia Commander Col. Rick Husband. These words came from a NASA official pre-flight interview. Rick spoke about how he had sung in choirs from elementary school to his college days. He sang in a barbershop quartet for several years and in community choirs. Until his death, Rick sang in the choir of Grace Community Church in Houston, Texas. Rick was one of the seven astronauts who passed on to life's next stage when the Space Shuttle Columbia broke up during re-entry on Saturday, February 1. Singing with others requires teamwork. When Rick was asked why he loved singing, he said, "First of all, I think it gives you a feeling of teamwork with other members of the choir" (Crosswalk.com, Feb. 3, 2003). Evidently, Jesus of Nazareth felt this same sense of teamwork with his chosen companions, the twelve apostles. At the end of their dinner together on the night Jesus was later arrested, the record says: "Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives" (Mark 14:26). Earlier in that meal, Jesus had complimented his team members by saying, "You are the men who have stood by me in all that I have gone through" (Luke 22:28, Phillips). Singing with others releases emotion. Again, reflecting on his singing, astronaut Rick Husband said, "It also gives you a feeling of almost release, in my particular case, because it's, I'd say, very relaxing." Nearly a thousand years before Jesus of Nazareth lived, King Saul of Israel experienced a similar release of emotions when music was played for him in times when he suffered from dark moods. The record says: "And whenever the spirit from God came over Saul, David would take a harp and play; Saul would then be soothed; it would do him good, and the evil spirit would leave him" (1 Samuel 16:23, NJB).

He introduced " If I Loved You" with co-star Jan Clayton , and stopped the show with the epic "Soliloquy." You can reach author John Kenrick at jbk@musicals101.com Who's Who in Musicals: A to Ba by John Kenrick Abbott , George (Francis) Director, librettist, producer b. Jan. 25, 1887 (Forrestville, NY) - d. Jan. 31. 1995 (Miami Beach, FL) During his long career, practically everyone referred to him as "Mr. Abbott" – a sign of respect that this talented man never discouraged. Originally an actor, he rose to fame as a playwright, eventually becoming a stage director and musical comedy librettist. In the course of over 130 Broadway productions, Abbott worked with most of the prominent stage talents of his time. His musical comedy career began when he directed Richard Rodgers Lorenz Hart 's Jumbo (1935). He worked with the same team on a series of hit shows, staging and co-authoring the librettos for On Your Toes The Boys From Syracuse (1938) and Pal Joey (1940). Abbott gave musical comedy a faster pace and a refreshing dose of modern sophistication.

I think I first discovered that I was interested in folk music when I started looking around for new songs to sing when we went to the pub after a Sealed Knot battle. Of course I had been interested in folk music before then, I just didn't realise it. Like everyone else, of course, we sang folk songs at school, although the only one in particular that I can remember (apart from Nursery Rhymes) is 'The Lincolnshire Poacher'. I also remember singing songs with my Dad (and my sister ) when going on long car journeys, either on holiday, or to visit family in Gloucester I don't know why we never sang at other times, but I guess I grew up thinking that these sort of songs were for when you were in the car. I still sing in the car, but usually when I am on my own, on the way to/from work . The songs I remember singing with my Dad (and I still remember all the words) were: I also remember my Dad singing 'My old Man's A Dustman', and a version of 'The Twelve Days Of Christmas' which had the hero deliving items such as

H e makes a fine figure of Charity in his old age, with his preoccupied blue eyes under a brow that is marked only by three lines like three beams thrown upward by a sun. He has a large, joyous, curving mouth, side-whiskers, careless beard, large feet. He has but one touch of sentiment. Nearly half a century ago he fell in love with a pretty woman, and unsuccessfully; yet, though she is known to be married and still alive, he has come to have for her memory a grandfatherly tenderness, regarding her as a white and careless girl, in spite of time. For the rest, so warm and radiant is he, that I remember the peculiarity of Kai. "When it rained hardest, whatever he carried remained dry for a handbreadth above and a handbreadth below his hand, and when his companions were coldest, it was to them as fuel with which to light their fire."

After his conversion to Christianity, he gave up all worldly possessions and became a hermit at Edessa in Mesopotamia, where he lived in severe austerity. He then moved to a hermitage next to a monastery in Antioch, Syria, and attracted numerous visitors with his reputation for holiness and as a miracle-worker. He publicly and valiantly opposed Arians, who attempted to exile him, but Emperor Valens refused to allow it because he thought the death of his attendants who had threatened to murder Aphraates was retribution for his threat. Some scholars considered Aphraates identical with the bishop of the monastery of Mar Mattai near Mosul, Mesopotamia, and the author of

This year [1926], and at this season, San Francisco celebrates the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its birth. Ours is an old city, as age is reckoned in the West, and the story of the beginning has the glamour not only of age but of romance. The port of San Francisco, from the time of its discovery, assumed a very definite importance in international politics; so our beginnings have also a special significance. On the fifteenth of December, 1774, Viceroy Bucareli sent from Mexico City a very important letter to Father Junipero Serra at Monterey. This was the first move in the grand project of founding San Francisco. On September 29, 1775, in compliance with the order of Bucareli, Anza set out from Sonora, Mexico, for San Francisco. His party consisted of 177 persons, including women and children. He had a pack-train of 120 mules. After the great Anza himself, the outstanding members of this expedition were Lieutenant Moraga, and Father Font, who kept an invaluable diary. But while the expedition was halted, Anza was not to be thwarted. His party had arrived in Monterey on March 10, 1776. On the twenty-second, taking with him Moraga, Father Font, and a squad of soldiers, he started for San Francisco. Father Font as this entry for March 27:
