Br. Ned Dunne
Hear my song, says long-serving Capuchin. By Mairead Sheridan. Padro Pio look-a-like, Capuchin Brother Edward Dunne, is to celebrate his Golden Jubilee this year. The Dublin-born brother who still retains his ‘capital accent’ has been in Ard Mhuire Friary Creeslough for over sixteen years. Since 1985 Brother Edward has being looking after the shop in the friary, his very own version of what he dubs ‘Dunne’s Stores better Value’. Br. Edward (71), who still goes for a swim in the sea regularly, is well- known among Creeslough people and Ards Friary visitors. He is known for his quick wit and good sense of humour and his ability to tell a good yarn. Among his many other talents is his singing ability. As he is prone to breaking into song mid-sentence, he often leaves his audience in awe of his unpredictability. Before Br. Edward joined the Order on January 26, 1952, he held all sorts of jobs. He was a van boy with Phoenix Laundry, a foot delivery boy and in his mid twenties got a promotion to work with the prestigious Gilligan’s Draper Store on Henry St. After he joined the order he proved to be a flexible recruit capable of turning his hand to anything. His first job after he was investiturised

Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn
High over Bannockburn, battle of no return. Bruce ranked his Scottishmen all in good order. Down on the other side - fifty divisions wide. Edward had brought his men over the border. Armoured from head to fist, glimpsed through the morning mist Soldiers of Robert Bruce awaiting the order. Down on the lower ground, trumpets and bugles sound Edward of England had crossed over the border. Proud was the English king, loud did his harpists sing.

    The Fool's Prayer
      T HE royal feast was done; the King
      Sought some new sport to banish care,
      And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
      Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"
      The jester doffed his cap and bells,
      And stood the mocking court before;
      They could not see the bitter smile
      Behind the painted grin he wore.
      He bowed his head, and bent his knee
      Upon the monarch's silken stool;
      His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
      Be merciful to me, a fool!
      "No pity, Lord, could change the heart
      From red with wrong to white as wool;
      The rod must heal the sin; but Lord,
      Be merciful to me, a fool!
      " 'Tis not by guilt the onward sweep
      Of truth and right, O Lord, we stay;
      'Tis by our follies that so long
      We hold the earth from heaven away.
      "These clumsy feet, still in the mire,
      Go crushing blossoms without end;
      These hard, well-meaning hands we thrust
      Among the heart-strings of a friend.
      "The ill-timed truth we might have kept-
      Who knows how sharp it pierced and stung?

Chapter One
If Dad had been a coal baron, like Mr. Tudor Carstairs, or a stock- watering captain of industry, like Mrs. Sanderson-Spear's husband, or descended from a long line of whisky distillers, like Mrs. Carmichael Porter, why, then his little Elizabeth would have been allowed the to sit in seat of the scornful with the rest of the Four Hundred, and this story would never have been written. But Dad wasn't any of these things; he was just an old love who had made seven million dollars by the luckiest fluke in the world. [Annotate 1.1] Everybody in southern California knew it was a fluke, too, so the seven millions came in for all the respect that would otherwise have fallen to Dad. Of course we were celebrities, in a way, but in a very horrid way. Dad was Old Tom Middleton, who used to keep a livery-stable in San Bernardino, and I was Old Tom Middleton's girl, "who actually used to live over a livery-stable, my dear!" It sounds fearfully sordid, doesn't it? [Annotate 1.2]

Edward L Shaughnessy's translation of the Mawangdui Yijing
by Richard Rutt Edward L Shaughnessy. 'I Ching: the Classic of Changes translated with an introduction and commentary: the first English translation of the newly discovered second century BC Mawangdui texts.' New York: Ballantyne Books, 1997, hardback, x + 350 pages. $25.95. ISBN 0-345-36243-8. Rarely can two PhD theses have been so important for their field as 'The Original Yijing' by Richard Kunst (1985) and 'The composition of the Zhouyi' by Edward Shaughnessy (1983). In these two papers, for the first time since Arthur Waley wrote a short article 50 years earlier, 20th century Chinese ideas about the origin of Yijing were extensively discussed in English. Yet neither thesis was able to take account of a manuscript of Yijing 350 years older than any previously known, discovered at Mawangdui, near Changsha in Hunan, in 1973. Early reports suggested that this find might revolutionise our view of the origins of Yijing, but adequate transcriptions and descriptions were not available until 1993. Edward Shaughnessy, now Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, published a preliminary paper in 'Early China' 19 (1994) and has now made this welcome translation, which he calls 'very much a first effort to make available to a wider reading audience, both general and scholarly, the earliest, yet newest text of one of the greatest books of world literature.'

A specially-written fanfare was followed by traditional hymns at the wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones. The fanfare was played by the Band of the Royal Marines as the royal bride, accompanied by her father, Christopher, arrived at the West Door of St George's Chapel at Windsor. For the bride's procession to the Altar Screen, the couple chose the Marche Heroique by Sir Herbert Brewer. After introductory remarks by the Bishop of Norwich, the congregation sang Ye Holy Angels Bright while the bridal party moved to the Sanctuary Step in the Quire of the Chapel. Prayers were led by the Dean of Windsor
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, was sung after the marriage ceremony, followed by the Lesson, the First Letter of John, chapter 4, verses 7-11, read by Sophie's brother, David. Prayers were then led by the Dean of Windsor and, while the congregation remained kneeling, the choir sang A Latin Anthem (Where There Is Charity And Love, There Is God). This was followed by the Blessing by the Bishop.

b Broadheath, Worcester, 1857; d Worcester, 1934). Eng. composer and cond. He was the son of a mus.-shop proprietor in Worcester who was also an organist, pf.-tuner, and teacher. He showed an early aptitude for mus., learning the org., vn., and other instr. He hoped, on leaving school at 15, to go to Leipzig Cons. but his father could not afford to send him, so after a brief spell in a solicitor's office, he helped his father in the shop and became his ass. organist at St George's RC Church, Worcester. Soon he was playing the vn. in several local orchs. or chamber groups and became cond. of several. With his brothers and friends he formed a wind quintet, for which he comp. several works. His first comps. had been written during childhood, incl. mus. for a play written and prod. by the Elgar children, The Wand of Youth , which he adapted as 2 orch. suites in 1907-8. In 1877 he went to London for vn. lessons from Pollitzer but abandoned them when he realized he would not become a virtuoso. He played in the 2nd vns. in the 3 Choirs Fest. orch. at Worcester in 1878. The following year he became bandmaster at the county lunatic asylum at Powick where members of the staff played weekly for dances. Elgar made several arrs. of operatic arias for concerts there and also comp. a series of quadrilles. In 1882 he joined the 1st vns. in a Birmingham orch. cond. by W. Stockley, who incl. Elgar's
