Edward Sang , mathematician, engineer and actuary, was the 6 th of 11 children of Edward Sang (1771-1862), nurseryman and sometime Provost of Kirkcaldy, and his wife Jean Nicol (b.1773) a relative of William Nicol (b.1770) who invented the Nicol prism. He attended a subscription school, founded by his father and others, under a gifted headmaster Edward Irving. At Edinburgh University during 1818 - 1824, he impressed professors William Wallace and John Leslie in mathematics and natural philosophy, despite periods of illness. Small for his age, he was first mocked by fellow-students, then admired for his precocious talent. Sang first worked in Edinburgh as surveyor, civil engineer and mathematics teacher and lectured on natural philosophy. During 1841-43 he was Professor of Mechanical Sciences at the nonconformist Manchester New College, then went to Constantinople to establish engineering schools, plan railways and an ironworks. He lectured (in Turkish) at the Imperial School, Muhendis-hana Berii and gained fame by predicting the solar eclipse of 1847, thereby dispelling superstition. He resigned against the Sultan's wishes, returning to Edinburgh in 1854 to teach mathematics. An active Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts and the Royal Society of Edinburgh , he received awards from both and from the Institution of Civil Engineers, London (1879). He was a founder member and first official lecturer of the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland, a corresponding member of the Royal Tunis Academy, an Ll.D. of Edinburgh University and an honorary member of the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia. He married Isabella Elmslie in 1832 and had at least three daughters and at least one son.

Abstract: Our focus is on the novel use of a process-oriented methodology in distributed-memory simulation systems. To the best of our knowledge, the few existing systems which adopt a process-view strictly use message-passing to effect process-interaction in distributed-memory settings. As a result, these systems avoid scenarios in which processes access passive but shared components. This can restrict the manner in which a system is modelled and hinder the phase of distributed model construction. In... (Update)

Edward Sang
Mathematician, engineer and actuary. Born Kirkcaldy, son of Edward Sang, nurseryman and Provost of the town, and his wife Jean Nicol (b.1773) sister of William Nicol (1768 - 1851) who invented the Nicol prism. Sang was educated in Kirkcaldy and at the University of Edinburgh where his talent impressed his professors, William Wallace (1768 - 1843) and Sir John Leslie (1766 - 1832). He lectured at the University, and also worked in the City as a surveyor and civil engineer. He then moved to a chair at Manchester and Istanbul (Turkey), where he built engineering schools and railways. While teaching in Turkish, he became famous for predicting the solar eclipse of 1847, effectively countering the superstitions in that country at the time. Returning to Edinburgh in 1854, Sang gained a reputation as a prodigious author of scientific and engineering articles, together with mathematical, actuarial and astronomical tables. He became a founder member of the Faculty of Actuaries in Scotland. If you have found this information useful please consider

Edward Sang: Actuary of the Millennium [Published in Newsletter of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland, November 1999 and a slightly edited version in The Actuary, April, 2000.] Dr Edward Sang, 1805-1890, who had inscribed on his telescope, He rewardeth the searcher and keeper of His Laws. Logarithms belong to the first half of our professions history, the half shared with Dickens’s Hard Times of the smoking chimneys stacks, pounding steam engines, and dark canals. The apprenticeship of the early actuary, log tables in left hand and pencil scribbling in right, does not strike us as appealing – that is, until it is compared to the alternative toils of that grim time. It is not so odd then that there is no word to describe a person that loves calculating log tables. Yet such a word is needed to describe two of the 38 gentlemen that constituted the Faculty of Actuaries in January 1956. But Ebenezer Erskine Scott and Edward Sang were not equals in their devotion; for Mr Scott it was just an infatuation. Dr Sang had it bad. The numbers are mind-numbing. Edward Sang, in his terse introduction to

Corrections Edward Gorey No one sheds light on darkness from quite the same perspective as this Cape Cod specialist in morbid, fine-lined jocularity. By Amy Benfer P ity the poor books editors in the 1950s when confronted with yet another manuscript by the persistent Edward Gorey. Back then no one knew quite what to call his small gems with their manic pen-and-ink illustrations of overstuffed drawing rooms, set somewhere between the Edwardian era and the 1920s, and with punch lines taken from the unspeakable horror of their well-dressed characters' untimely demises. Gorey's work was not at first met with open arms by the publishing world to put it mildly. Today, however, with his cult of devotees numbering in the millions, his first efforts are collected in three bestselling anthologies: "Amphigorey," "Amphigorey, Too" and "Amphigorey Also." And Harcourt Brace, a longtime publisher of Gorey's work, has recently reissued many of his early books, including his first, "The Unstrung Harp" (1953), and the classic "pornographic work," "The Curious Sofa," which was published under the anagrammatic name "Ogdred Weary" and contains the immortal line: "Still later Gerald did a terrible thing to Elsie with a saucepan."
