The Graham Weekly Album Review #1175 Leftover Salmon: The Nashville Sessions
by George Graham
(Hollywood Records As broadcast on WVIA-FM 11/10/99) Flecktones electric band, and recently Fleck released an album of bluegrass to considerable acclaim. This week, we have an interesting release by a Colorado band called Leftover Salmon. The CD is a kind of all-star bluegrass collaboration and it's called The Nashville Sessions Leftover Salmon is based in Boulder, Colorado and released their first album in 1993. Their credo of eclecticism is illustrated by how they describe their music: "Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass." They share some stylistic influence with another excellent Colorado band String Cheese Incident. In recent years, there has developed a distinctive and quite eclectic Rocky Mountain bluegrass scene, with the annual Telluride Bluegrass festival no doubt being a strong catalyst. Bands like String Cheese Incident and Leftover Salmon have been electrifying the bluegrass influence and getting jazzy, rocky and mixing in other genres, while also showing some first-rate musicianship, getting into extended instrumental jams in performance and generally having a good time. They have been touring extensively, and gaining ever more fans as they expand their geographical range. Flecktones , saxophonist Jeff Coffin, plus Fleck's former bandmates in New Grass Revival, Sam Bush and John Cowan, along with bluegrass legends Del McCoury and Earl Scruggs, country singer Waylon Jennings, and even blues singer

Testimony of George T. Frampton, Chair
Council on Environmental Quality
before the
July 19, 2000 Mr. Chairman and members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to testify today regarding the Administration’s program to restore Columbia River salmon and, in particular, our progress toward completion of an updated biological opinion on operation of the Columbia River hydropower system. I am joined today by Will Stelle, Administrator of the Northwest Region of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Judi Johansen, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer for the Department of Energy’s Bonneville Power Administration, Brigadier General Carl Strock representing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Bill Shake of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These officials have worked together with my agency and many representatives from state, tribal, and local governments, and dozens of stakeholder groups to frame our comprehensive approach to Columbia River salmon recovery. The draft biological opinions and draft Basin-wide Recovery Strategy are still in preparation, and not all details are complete. The biological opinion is a science-based determination, and it would be inappropriate to predict or prejudge its final form. We will, however, be able to share a number of key features with you today. My comments will cover the broader concepts, while my colleagues’ testimony will present more details. Mr. Chairman, this Administration recognizes and is committed to help sustain the special character of the Pacific Northwest’s communities and natural resources. We are well aware that the people of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana expect the federal government to share their determination to protect the region’s quality of life and to work in active partnership with them to achieve that goal. We will work to fulfill that expectation and work as partners.

GEORGE
SALMON
The most distinguished of Mac Cullagh's students was George Salmon, also a geometer, whose books on conics sections and on geometry of three dimensions were republished in very many editions and in several languages, and remained in use well into the present century. As well as making significant original contributions in geometry Salmon was actively involved with the English mathematicians Arthur Cayley and J.J. Sylvester in pioneering work in algebra based on the study of invariants under linear transformations. It was through his book Lessons Introductory to the Modern Higher Algebra that his work became widely known. Salmon could carry through the most formidable of calculations and yet his books, the successive editions of which incorporated new and often original results, were models of clarity and elegance. Writing of these books the mathematician Felix Klein said These books are like delightful and instructive walks through forests, fields and gardens, in which the guide points out now this beauty, now that strange phenomenon, without forcing everything together into a rigid system ... We all grew up in these flower gardens; here we gathered the basic knowledge on which we were later to build.'

Landlock salmon, lakers, bass at Lake George
New York fishing map feature
By Manny Luftglass
Fishing and Hunting News
  • Check out our newest feature: Interactive fishing maps! The lake ranges down to 200 feet in several areas and at this depth, lake trout is king. If you want to fish shallower, try just below the surface or off inlet mouths for landlocked salmon. The natural bait on Lake George is comprised of two separate and distinct fish: smelt and ciscoes. The cisco is really a lake whitefish. Without doubt, there are also countless golden shiners in Lake George, if only because so many anglers drop their leftover shiners overboard at the end of the day. Smelt come into the lake after their spawning run and, at times, the lake really is filled with them. But it is illegal to use or even have any live smelt in your possession on Lake George. Target either lake trout, landlocked salmon or bass on New York's Lake George.

The 'edition' I am reading is a late reprint from the early years
of this century (1905, if I remember correctly). It does not say
which edition it is based on. The reason why I am using it is that
I purchased it for five pounds at an antiquarian book fair earlier
    this year.
I assume that Salmon would have no reason to change whatever notation
he had adopted in the first edition.
If there were good reason for consulting a first edition, I would expect to be able to find one in our College library. http://members.aol.com/jeff570/geometry.html On that page you write Slope. The earliest known use of m for slope is an 1844 British text by M. O'Brien entitled A Treatise on Plane Co-Ordinate Geometry [V. Frederick Rickey].
