George attended Mr Porter's school in his home town of Cork, in the south of Ireland, and then entered Trinity College, Dublin, in 1833. At this time Trinity College, Dublin, restricted its degrees, fellowships, and scholarships to Anglicans. It was some time after this, in 1873, that all religious requirements were removed from the university. This was not a problem for Salmon, who was an Anglican, but in order to take up the Fellowship that Trinity offered him in 1841 he was required to take holy orders in the Church of Ireland, which indeed he did being ordained deacon in 1844 and a priest in 1845. In addition to his mathematics position, he was appointed to a divinity lectureship in 1845. In 1844 Salmon married Frances Anne Salvador, the daughter of the Reverend J L Salvador. They had six children, four boys and two girls, but only two of these six children (the eldest boy and the youngest girl) survived him. In 1848 he was appointed as Donegal lecturer in mathematics at Trinity.

George Salmon
GEORGE SALMON (1819-1904) was a distinguished mathematician as well as a theologian. His father, Michael Salmon, was a linen merchant and his mother, Helen Weekes, was the daughter of the Reverend Edward Weekes. George attended school in his home town of Cork, in the south of Ireland, and then entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1833. He studied mathematics and classics at Dublin, and graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1838. He became a Fellow in 1841, Regius professor of divinity in 1866, and Provost in 1888. In 1844 Salmon married Frances Salvador, the daughter of the Reverend J. L. Salvador. They had six children, four boys and two girls. He was ordained priest in 1845. A strong Protestant, Salmon co-operated with R. Whately in writing the ‘Cautions for the Times' (1853), intended as a reply to the ‘Tracts for the Times' (1833-41). His lectures on the “Infallibility of the Church”, first published in 1888, were a defence of Protestant principles against the tenets of the Church of Rome, and well illustrate at once his skill, his vigour, and his humour, as a controversialist. In his widely read “Introduction to the New Testament” (1885), he was more concerned to refute critical theories than to produce a handbook of reference. Salmon also took a prominent part in the reconstruction of the Irish Church after its disestablishment in 1870.

He became a close friend of Cayley and Sylvester . Salmon discovered, together with Cayley , the 27 lines on the cubic surface and himself made many discoveries about ruled surfaces and other surfaces. Salmon is best remembered for his textbooks written between 1848 and 1862. Yes, I wonder what the Pacific Northwest might be like with a much warmer climate. It certainly would not bode well for salmon. However for salmon to survive warmer waters, the flow rate through the Columbia and Snake Rivers would likely have to be increased. Not increasing the flow rate combined with the effects of global warming upon oceanic food resources as well as warmer water during adult and smolt migration might drive the remaining populations over the brink. As to removing dams, the only serious proposals that I have seen involve the four dams on the lower Snake River which, apparently, are not major contributors to the power supply. And even those proposals seem to favor putting the dams into standby status in case the power was needed in the future. The following is from the summer edition of Salmon Passage Notes published by the Army Corps of Engineers, In general, natural river level drawdown (decommissioning the dams) would entail removal of the earthen embankment section at each of the lower Snake River dams to create a channel around the dams. After lowering the reservoirs by releasing water through the spillways and opening up the turbine passages, the earthen portion would be excavated and millions of yards of silts, sands and gravels would be removed.

A Reply to Anglican George Salmon's Infallibility of the Church In the recent generally fair work by Evangelical apologists Norm Geisler/Ralph MacKenzie Roman Catholics and Evangelicals: Agreements and Differences (Baker Books, 1995), which is sometimes very challenging and contains some complex arguments against the Catholic faith (from an Evangelical "baptistic" perspective), the following blunder is made in the authors' chapter on "Infallibility" (chapter 11), at the beginning of their section "A Response to the Arguments for Infallibility" : "Protestants accept the infallibility of Scripture but deny that any human being or institution is the infallible interpreter of Scripture. The classic refutation of papal infallibility was written by George Salmon, The Infallibility of the Church It has never really been answered by the Catholic church. " (page 206, emphasis mine) The authors give a date of 1914 for the Anglican divine George Salmon's "celebrated" attack on the Catholic faith, the Papacy and papal infallibility however, the book was originally published the previous century, around 1888 or 1889. And in fact, a Catholic answer was made in a series of articles in a periodical called the Irish Ecclesiastical Record (1901-2). In the middle of the 20th century, an "abridged edition" of Salmon was published, and a Catholic reply was made to that as well. The following is adapted from the book
