Frontiers of Atomic Physics at RLE
Absorption shadows of sodium atoms in ultracold clouds show evidence for Bose-Einstein condensation as the clouds are cooled to lower temperatures (from left): above the condensation point, just after condensation begins, and the remaining, essentially pure condensate. BEC of atomic gases presents new possibilities for applied and fundamental research. For the first time, it provides scientists with macroscopic samples of atoms in a single quantum state, implying ultimate control over the motion of atoms. Several applications are foreseen in nanotechnology (high-resolution atom deposition), precision measurements (new atomic clocks and the determination of fundamental constants), and atom optics (atom interferometers that hold promise as ultraprecise gyroscopes). The focus for this issue of RLE currents is research on fundamental atomic physics in RLE's Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Physics group. Traditionally, atomic physics is concerned with the structure of atoms and how they interact with each other, with other particles, and with light. Much of the field continues to be occupied with these studies, and the fruits of this research are eagerly consumed by other scientific disciplines, including molecular physics, astronomy, astrophysics, plasma physics, and atmospheric science. Beyond these pursuits, however, atomic physics has a tradition of crucial experiments that provide critical tests for new and established theories. These experiments also lead to the development of refined methods for precise observation. This tradition has animated atomic physics research at RLE since the laboratory's earliest days, and it is very much alive in RLE today.

Johannes Rydberg
Johannes Rydberg , more known as Janne Rydberg ) was a Swedish physicist mostly known for creating the Rydberg formula , which is used to predict which wavelengths that photons (i.e. light ) emitted from shifts in the energy level of a certain electron around a certain atomic nucleus will have. MISCELLANEOUS DISCIPLE OF THE ROHAN MASTER? The Murder of Thomas Becket. Illuminated arch-shaped miniature depicting the murder of Thomas Becket. France (Normandy, Rouen?), c. 1430. Becket stands in front of an altar, richly gilt, on which is displayed his bishop's mitre. One of his three attackers is depicted stabbing Becket in the side with a spear. He has already suffered a head wound, no doubt inflicted by another attacker who wields a sword above Becket's head. The scene is framed within a three-quarter illuminated baguette border of flowers and foliage on a gold ground, upper and side border of acanthus and gold foliage on delicate stems. Three-line illuminated initial below the miniature. Size of leaf: 140 x 100 mm. (miniature: 88 x 67 mm). A fine example of a miniature from the Tarleton Hours, a manuscript for the Use of Sarum, prepared in Normandy (Rouen?) for a female owner. By the late 15th century the manuscript was on English soil. Images of Thomas Becket (c. 1118-70) are rarely found in Books of Hours made in England for the home market - surprisingly, as Becket was one of the most popular of English Saints. During the English Reformation images of Becket were deliberately destroyed and his name fell into disrepute for its close identification with papal allegiance. In 1538, King Henry VIII decreed: "that his ymages and pictures, through the hole realme, shall be putte down and avoyded out of all churches, chapelles, and other places and that hense forthe, the dayes vsed to bve festivall in his name, shall not be obserued, nor the service, office, antiphons, collettes, and prayers in his namme redde, but rased out af all bokes" (see: Roger Wieck, Painted Prayers, 1997, pp. 112).
