Bertrand Arthur William Russell was born at Trelleck on 18th May, 1872. His parents were Viscount Amberley and Katherine, daughter of 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley. At the age of three he was left an orphan. His father had wished him to be brought up as an agnostic; to avoid this he was made a ward of Court, and brought up by his grandmother. Instead of being sent to school he was taught by governesses and tutors, and thus acquired a perfect knowledge of French and German. In 1890 he went into residence at Trinity College In December 1894 he married Miss Alys Pearsall Smith. After spending some months in Berlin studying social democracy, they went to live near Haslemere, where he devoted his time to the study of philosophy. In 1900 he visited the Mathematical Congress at Paris. He was impressed with the ability of the Italian mathematician Peano and his pupils, and immediately studied Peano's works. In 1903 he wrote his first important book, The Principles of Mathematics Political Ideals , 1918) but was prevented by the military authorities. In 1918 he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for a pacifistic article he had written in the

Bertrand Russell
Over the course of his long career, Russell made significant contributions, not just to philosophy, but to a range of other subjects as well. Many of Russell's writings on a wide variety of topics (including education, ethics, politics, history, religion and popular science) have influenced generations of general readers. After a life marked by controversy (including dismissals from both Trinity College, Cambridge, and City College, New York), Russell was awarded the Order of Merit in 1949 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. Also noted for his many spirited anti-war and anti-nuclear protests, Russell remained a prominent public figure until his death at the age of 97. For an excellent short introduction to Russell's life, work and influence the reader is encouraged to consult John Slater's accessible and informative Bertrand Russell (Bristol: Thoemmes, 1994).

BERTRAND RUSSELL ON CONTACT WITH NATURE
By Gary Suttle
Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), the extraordinary British philosopher, mathematician, and social reformer, roundly rejected orthodox religious beliefs but not religion itself. "...I consider some form of personal religion highly desirable, and feel many people unsatisfactory through the lack of it, (although) I cannot accept the theology of any well known religion, and I incline to think that most churches at most times have done more harm than good." Russell believed that religion had to be grounded in scientific rationality yet he observed that brilliant thinkers melded science with mystical feelings. "The greatest men who have been philosophers have felt the need both of science and mysticism....In such (individuals) we see the true union of the mystic and the man of science, the highest eminence, as I think, that it is possible to achieve in the world of thought....One of the most convincing aspects of the mystic illumination is the apparent revelation of the oneness of all things, giving rise to pantheism in religion, and to monism in philosophy." Russell called Pantheist Benedict Spinoza "ethically supreme" among western philosophers, and he acknowledged Spinoza’s ideas in his popular book, The Conquest of Happiness Ecophilosopher George Sessions notes that "Russell had a life-long attraction to Spinozism." In "The Essence of Religion," Russell elaborated on a pantheistic sense of oneness, referring to "the selfless untrammeled life in the whole which frees man from the prison-house of eager wishes and little thoughts."
