Bertrand Russell
Over the course of his long career, Russell made significant contributions, not just to logic and philosophy, but to a broad range of other subjects including education, history, political theory and religious studies. In addition, many of his writings on a wide variety of topics in both the sciences and the humanities have influenced generations of general readers. After a life marked by controversy (including dismissals from both Trinity College, Cambridge, and City College, New York), Russell was awarded the Order of Merit in 1949 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. Also noted for his many spirited anti-war and anti-nuclear protests, Russell remained a prominent public figure until his death at the age of 97. Bertrand Russell published a large number of books on logic, the theory of knowledge, and many other topics. He is one of the most important logicians of the 20 th Century. Russell's Mathematical Contributions Over a long and varied career, Bertrand Russell made ground-breaking contributions to the foundations of mathematics and to the development of contemporary formal logic, as well as to analytic philosophy. His contributions relating to mathematics include his discovery of Russell's paradox, his defence of logicism (the view that mathematics is, in some significant sense, reducible to formal logic), his introduction of the theory of types, and his refining and popularizing of the first-order predicate calculus. Along with he is usually credited with being one of the two most important logicians of the twentieth century.

Born: May 18, 1872 in Ravenscroft, Wales

Bertrand Russell was a British mathematician and philosopher who, along with A.N. Whitehead, wrote Principia Mathematica in 1903. This work was an important landmark in the development of logic and the philosophy of mathematics in the 20th century. In it, Russell and Whitehead demonstrated that mathematics can be expressed via a few terms of general logic and that numbers can be defined as classes. In the process, they also developed concepts which allowed symbolic logic to become an important specialization in philosophy. These concepts raised the hopes among many philosophers that they might eventually be able to achieve the sort of certitude in their field which was traditionally the province of the natural sciences.

Bertrand Arthur William, 3. Earl Russell 18.

Brief description of Bertrand Russell s life with photographs. (1959) Wisdom of the West (ed. by Paul Foulkers). (1960) russell bertrand Speaks His Mind.
Born: May 18, 1872 in Ravenscroft, Trelleck, Monmouthshire, Wales Died: Feb 2, 1970 in Penrhyndeudraeth, Merioneth, Wales. Bertrand Russell, British philosopher, logician, essayist, and social critic, best known for his work in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy, is the twentieth century’s most important thinker. Many consider him to be the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century. He was born into an aristocratic family in 1872 at the zenith of Britain’s economic and political dominance, and died in 1970 when Britain’s power had been obscured in fairy tales subsequent to world wars. John stuart Mill was his godfather. He was one of the world’s most influential critics of nuclear weapons and the American war in Vietnam. His parents died when he was three years old. Russell's father had arranged custody of his two sons to two atheists but after his death in 1876 Russell’s grandfather who had served twice as Prime Minister under Queen Victoria had no difficulty in getting Russell's father's will overturned. After the death of his grandfather in 1878, Russell was brought up by his grandmother, Lady Russell. Russell was at first educated privately at home and later went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a brilliant student of mathematics and philosophy. Russell obtained degrees both in mathematics and in the moral science.
