Ferdinand Rudio Kummer's problem of determining all surfaces of which the centres of curvature form second order cofocal surfaces. He reduced this problem to the problem of solving a differential equation Rudio worked on group theory , algebra and geometry. He is best remembered for his work in the history of mathematics, in particular he wrote a major article on squaring the circle and he also wrote biographies of mathematicians. One of his most important contributions to mathematics was editing the collected works of Euler . Rudio proposed the project in 1883 since this was the centenary of Euler 's death. He continued to advocate the importance of this project and at the International Congress of Mathematicians at Zurich in 1897 he suggested it would be a suitable memorial for the year 1907 which was the bicentennial of Euler 's birth. The project was not approved until 1909, twenty six years after Rudio first proposed it.

A quotation by Ferdinand Rudio
The whole form of mathematical thinking was created by Euler. It is only with the greatest of difficulty that one is able to follow the writings of any author preceding Euler, because it was not yet known how to let the formulas speak for themselves. This art Euler was the first to teach.

Eisenstein, Ferdinand (1823-1852)

Portions of this entry contributed by Margherita Barile German mathematician who was Gauss's favorite disciple. Eisenstein took the Cauchy-Riemann equations as the starting point for a theory of complex functions. He also made advances in Abelian and hypergeometric functions as well is in contributions to number theory, including the so-called Eisenstein integers which are members of the imaginary quadratic field , and the Eisenstein series At the end of the curriculum vitae that he presented for his school-leaving examination in 1843, Eisenstein wrote, "It is poor of achievements, deeds and merits, but perhaps it is not poor of good substance: it contains the resolutions and intentions for my future life and the germs of all good and all beauty that will unfold one day" (Rudio 1975). Gauss is reported to have said, "There have been but three epoch-making mathematicians, Archimedes Newton , and Eisenstein" (Bell 1986, p. 237). Placing Eisenstein in the same league with Archimedes and Newton seems curious, but because Eisenstein died very young, it is possible
