Historian Steven Ambrose Dead at 66 National Geographic News
October 15, 2002
Stephen E. Ambrose, one of a handful of historians who have become best-selling authors, died of lung cancer Sunday, October 13th in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Perhaps best known for his books on Lewis and Clark and World War II, Ambrose also founded the National D-Day Museum and the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans. During his career, much of which he spent as a professor at the University of New Orleans, he wrote or edited more than 35 books. Ambrose was an Explorer-in-Residence for the National Geographic Society. For him, teaching and writing were two sides of the same coin.

Jobs This Vast Land: A Young Man's Journal of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Drawing on his knowledge of the Northwest Passage, Ambrose created the fictional diary of nineteen-year-old George Shannon, who was the youngest member of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery. The manuscript was submitted by Dr. Ambrose to his editors prior to his death in October 2002. "My father's passion for the story of Lewis and Clark compelled him to move beyond the bounds of non-fiction," said Hugh Ambrose, son of Stephen E. Ambrose and partner with Dr. Ambrose for ten years. "He took all his years of reading the journals, of camping along the trail, of wondering what really happened, and fashioned them into This Vast Land ." Stephenie Ambrose Tubbs, Lewis and Clark scholar and daughter of Stephen E. Ambrose, said, "George Shannon, the perennially lost member of the Expedition, is at last finally found and fully illuminated in this compelling novel by historian Stephen E. Ambrose." Stephen E. Ambrose (1936-2002) was one of contemporary America's most renowned historians. His many bestselling books include

Stephen Edward Ambrose - 1936 Helena By Nicholas O. Andrews I. Biography Stephen Edward Ambrose was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin in 1936. He was the second son to Rosepha Trippe and Stephen Hedges Ambrose. His older brother, Harry, was two years ahead of him and his younger brother, Bill, was two years behind him in age. Ambrose's father worked as a medical doctor in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His mother worked in a pea cannery next to German POWs during the war. Ambrose has relayed anecdotes of his childhood during the war years. He kneeled and prayed with his mother when Franklin Roosevelt read a prayer over the radio for all the troops fighting in the war. He and his brothers would watch newsreels at the theatre for a dime. He also remembers collecting tin foil gum wrappers, wrapping them into balls and turning them in to be recycled. Dr. Ambrose is currently retired from his teaching positions and spends his time writing and giving talks about history to various groups. He divides his time between his houses in Helena, Montana and New Orleans, Louisiana. He enjoys biking, canoeing and woodworking. II. Publishing Career

Fred Rogers was in a class all his own. While the rest of children's entertainment and the world gradually either whipped itself up into a frenzy of electric hipness and sophisticated media consumption or coagulated into a kind of hippie-dippy debauch of "everything's all right" infantilism, Mister Rogers and the denizens of his neighborhood stayed their course of tender yet matter-of-fact lessons on the wherefores and whys of Life as we know it. Unconditional love is like that. Can we ever be forgiven for taking him for granted or, worse yet, questioning his unfathomable goodness? I was born in 1979, and it appears to me that there exists a discernable schism between my peers and the preceding generations of viewers who frequented Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood . Whereas the now-adults who grew up in the late 1960s and early 1970s tend to take Mister Rogers at face value and are thankful for his (relatively) secular morality, we children of the early-to-mid 1980s can be a touch conflicted in our responses to him. "He's creepy!" some contend. With that pronouncement usually comes a flicker of self-doubt or confusion, as if they realize it's somehow sacrilegious to make that claim yet can't quite believe all that hi-de-ho cheerfulness isn't a ruse. Ah yes, we are truly the products of our times, those times when Reagan-era admonishments to stop-drop-n-roll, just say no, and resist the charms of strangers with candy breakdanced in our heads to the extent that simplicity could no longer be comprehended as simplicity; it had to be simplicity with a hidden agenda.

"Credulity is the man's weakness, but the child's strength." Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is over. Of course this is just the reportage of my Inner Adult, who absorbed all this stuff while I was still a toddler, transfixed before the television. But they are memories that stood in the back of my consciousness for years, seemingly untouched by time. And so when I heard that Fred Rogers died of stomach cancer on February 27, I had to stand still for a moment and recompose myself. "Won't you be my neighbor?" is a question that never (ever) gets asked in this caustic self-obsessed anomie-soaked era of American history (indeed Robert Putnam wrote a whole book about the lack of neighborly days in the beauty 'hood called Bowling Alone , and I strongly recommend it). Yet Fred Rogers began his show with this tune sung fresh and enthusiastic every time and this is what made him so special. He encouraged individualism and self-esteem at the same time that he slowly soaked us all in a sense of community, of shared experience. In this, he was one of the twentieth century's greatest heroes, a fact that was underscored on July 7, 2002, when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. One look at Fred Rogers, Hank Aaron, and Bill Cosby sharing the stage with such unsavory characters as President George W. Bush and fellow recipients Irving Kristol, Nancy Reagan, and Peter Drucker makes you doubly aware of the curious places where true greatness resides, and the towering heights that it so scrupulously avoids.
