Observer-Eccentric By Joe Kyriakoza May 27, 1997 It may not compare to the drought the Detroit Red Wings face with regards to the coveted Stanley Cup, but the Birmingham Seaholm track and field squad ended its 27-year itch at the 30th Annual Ambrose/Eccentric Relays on Tuesday by emerging victorious for the first time in the meet's history. Rochester followed Seaholm (62) with 57 points. Troy (45), host Troy Athens (40), North Farmington (39), and Bloomfield Hills Lahser rounded out the top six in the 12-team tournament organized by longtime track and field authority Kermit Ambrose, and sponsored by the . Last year's winner, Brother Rice, finished 11th with 14 points. The Maples placed sixth last season and have appeared in every Ambrose Relays except for 1969 and 1984. Seaholm coach Bill Johansson credits his senior captains Justin Palermo, J.C. Mellor, Andy Peck, and Geoff Dancik, not necessarily for their performance in the meet, but for creating the team's lineup. "They deserve credit," Johansson said, "They set up the winning lineup." The seniors also performed exceptionally, leading Seaholm to one first place finish, three second and third place showings and two fourth place finishes in the 13-event (all but the heavy men's relay reflects total score) tourney.

    SOUTH CAROLINA 14th INFANTRY REGIMENT
    Company B
Roll of Company "B," Fourteenth Infantry Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers: The whole company, officers and men, were from Edgefield. Officers commissioned and non-commissioned, 20; privates, 127; total rank and file, 147. Killed in battle, 23; killed by railroad accident, 1; died of wounds, 3; died of disease, 17; died in prison, 5; total deaths, 49. The number killed in battle in this company is rather above the average - died of wounds below the average. The whole loss is precisely one third during the war, which I have found to be the average loss of all the companies, the rolls of which I have copied. Some went a little over, some a little under. This company is the first one which I have found to be exact. If the Confederate States had in actual service in the field during the war as many as 240,000 men, then the actual number of deaths in battle and from the casualties of the war, was not less than 80,000. It is true, however, that some of the 80,000 would have died during that time; but it is true, nevertheless, that the war slaughtered in the Southern States 60,000 able-bodied men besides rendering many others cripples for life. "Lord, what fools these mortals be." OFFICERS:
Pinckney A. West, age 32, Captain; wounded at Ox Hill; discharged at Camp Gregg in consequence of wound.

Wednesday, 30 August, 2000, 15:42 GMT 16:42 UK Your tributes to Ambrose and Walsh
West Indians the world over are hoping that veteran pace bowlers Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose carry on beyond the end of the present series with England.
How do you rate the pair and what are your abiding memories of the deadly duo? Walsh made his debut in the 1984/85 series against Australia and Ambrose broke into the West Indian attack against Pakistan three years later. As the production line of fearsome West Indian fast bowlers slowed, Ambrose and Walsh revelled in the responsibility of forcing batsmen to "sniff leather" as they skittled batsmen out all over the world. More than 800 Test wickets later, do you think they should stay on or is it time for them to step aside and let other fast bowlers develop in their absence? They have been in exceptional form this summer but how do they rate alongside other great pace partnerships, like Lillee and Thomson, Lindwall and Miller, Trueman and Statham, and Hall and Griffith?

Rogers, William Pierce (23 June 1913-2 Jan. 2001) , secretary of state and attorney general, was born in Norfolk, New York, the only child of Harrison Alexander Rogers, a paper mill executive and banker, and Myra Beswick Rogers. At an early age Rogers took odd jobs to earn spending money. His mother died when he was thirteen, and he moved to Canton, New York, to live with his maternal grandparents. In 1930 he graduated at the head of his Canton High School class and then attended Colgate University on a tuition scholarship. He worked at various jobs throughout his college years to help meet living expenses and in 1934 graduated with a B.A. degree. More scholarships enabled him to enter Cornell Law School, from which he graduated fifth in his class in 1937. At Cornell, Rogers met Adele Langston, a classmate, whom he married on 27 June 1936. They had four children. Rogers's first law position was with the Wall Street firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft, which he joined soon after passing the New York bar examination in 1937. In the late 1930s the New York district attorney Thomas Dewey was becoming famous for his crime-busting efforts, and in 1938 Rogers was selected as one of Dewey's young assistant district attorneys. Between 1938 and 1942 Rogers argued over one thousand cases in court. In early 1942 he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and served as a lieutenant junior grade on the USS
