Benjamin Robins, the British mathematician, proved in 1746 that air resistance was a critical factor in the flight of projectiles. His apparatus consisted of a whirling arm device in which weight (M) turned a drum and rotated the test object (P). In the early 1800s, George Cayley devised the whirling arm as a way to measure the drag and lift of airfoils. George Cayley used a whirling arm to get the data he needed to design his first glider. Hiram Maxim built an "air blast apparatus for measuring the lift and drift of aeroplanes and aerocurves. " The First Wind Tunnels Beginning in the mid-1700s, hopeful airplane designers realized that, if they were to build aircraft that would fly, they needed to understand how air moved over aircraft surfaces. Although they observed birds and tried to pattern their aircraft after bird flight, these aircraft uniformly failed. Bird flight did not provide the data they needed. They recognized that, to get the necessary data, they had two choices: they could move their test aircraft through the air at the required velocity or they could blow air past a stationary model. The whirling arm was early researchers' attempt at the first method. The English mathematician Benjamin Robins used a whirling arm in his experiments in 1746. Robins mounted variously shaped objects on the tip of the arm and spun them in different directions. He found that the shape of the object seemed to affect the air resistance, or

The Controversy between Benjamin Robins and James Jurin arising out of their responses to Berkeley's Analyst Amongst the responses to George Berkeley's Analyst were two pamphlets by James Jurin (writing under the pseudonym of Philalethes Cantabrigiensis Geometry no Friend to Infidelity and The Minute Mathematician Another response to Berkeley was contained in A Discourse concerning the Nature and Certainty of Sir Isaac Newton's Methods of Fluxions and of Prime and Ultimate Ratios written by Benjamin Robins. However Jurin and Robins differed in their interpretation of certain passages in the works of Sir Isaac Newton. These differences were discussed in the pages of The Present State of the Republick of Letters in the years 1735 and 1736. (The dispute was continued between James Jurin and Henry Pemberton, in December 1836 and in 1837.) However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newtonon whose physics he gave public lecturesas well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected booktwo on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin's own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject's work, 'digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived'. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term 'philosophy' broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.

William Partridge, 1788-1812 Cullum #18. In the USMA Cadet Application Papers (Microfilm reel 688-2) William Partridge is listed as 1805/4. He was a student at Dartmouth before West Point, in fact a member of the senior class. John Smith, Professor of the Learned Languages at Dartmouth certified in a letter of September 18, 1805 that Partridge "is a young gentleman of pure morals, and reputable acquirements in Literature." These early letters almost always refer to the candidates moral character, and almost never to any mathematical preparation, although there are exceptions. Died September 20, 1812 at Detroit, MI, at age 24. He was a cadet at USMA from December 13, 1805 (the day after Alden Partridge arrived) until October 30, 1806 when he was graduated and promoted to Second Lieut., Corps of Engineers (Alden Partridge graduated and was promoted to First Lieut., Corps of Engineers the same day). On October 17, 1806 he was examined and, together with Alden Partridge, they were "the best Mathematicians in the Academy." Need to find out if they were related. Served at West Point, 1807.
