Benjamin Robins
Benjamin Robins, a British artilleryman and member of the Royal Society, began a study of fortifications, hydraulics and ballistics in the 1730s. While studying ballistics, he reached important conclusions about flight and published one of his books, New Principles of Gunnery in 1742. In it, he outlined his research that essentially formed the basis for all subsequent work on the theory of artillery, projectiles and aerodynamics. Robins was very disappointed with the performance of the guns of the day, especially their accuracy. The accurate range of most guns was a maximum of 300 to 400 yards, or 275 to 365 meters, and he was certain that they should perform better. To determine the cause of the poor performance and discover what could be improved, Robins began a systematic study of the projectile in motion. To conduct this research, he invented a device called the ballistic pendulum. Another technique he employed to study the trajectories of projectiles was to shoot them through a series of paper screens so that their actual paths could be determined. Robins' ballistic pendulum was simply a piece of wood, the bob, mounted on a tripod so that it could swing freely. The projectile being tested was fired into the pendulum bob. By knowing the exact weight of the piece of wood and the projectile being tested, the velocity of the projectile could be determined by measuring how far the pendulum moved. By moving the pendulum further away from the gun in successive steps, the decline in the speed of the projectile could be measured. The ballistic pendulum invented by Robins continued to be the preferred method for assimilating ballistic data until after World War II.

Benjamin Robins attended school in Bath, then went to London after leaving school. There he studied languages and mathematics without the help of tutors. He progressed quickly, publishing in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1727, the year he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society . He wrote on Johann Bernoulli 's laws of motion and impacts of rigid bodies, achieving considerable fame so that he was able to attract many pupils for mathematics tuition. He gave this as individual tuition, never teaching a class. Gradually Robins gave up teaching to become an engineer. He went on to construct bridges, mills and harbours. He also worked at making rivers navigable and draining fen land. In addition to this he began to study gunnery and fortifications. To gain experience he travelled through Flanders studying fortification work there, there was certainly much to see. On his return to England he published A discourse concerning the nature and certainty of Sir Isaac Newton 's method of fluxions and prime and ultimate ratios.

Next Robins, Benjamin. Observations On the Present Convention with Spain. London. 1739. 60 pp. This unusual work bears a calf backed binding with marbled boards, and a recent leather label. An armorial bookplate is located on the inside front cover. This historical work discusses the Treaty of El Pardo, signed on January 14, 1739, which is printed in full. At the convention described in this volume England and Spain agreed to avoid war, to meet in conference to settle their respective pretensions to American trade and navigation, and to discuss the borders of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. Furthermore, by this treaty Spain agreed to pay 95,000 pounds in damages to the South Sea Company. The two powers did enter into conflict later that year, however, when the War of Jenkins Ear erupted in October. The hostilities were precipitated by an incident that took place in 1738 when Captain Robert Jenkins appeared before a committee at the House of Commons and exhibited what he alleged to be his own amputated ear, cut off in 1731 in the West Indies by Spanish coast guards who boarded his ship, pillaged it, and then set it adrift. Public opinion in England, previously aroused by other Spanish outrages, was swiftly exploited by members of Parliament who were in opposition to the government of Robert Walpole. Observations . These publications brought Robins political notice and he was appointed to a secret committee reporting to the House of Commons. The function of this group was to examine and report on the past conduct of Walpole. Robins' interests spread to weaponry and in 1742 he published his best known work

Robins, Benjamin Narrative of what passed in the Common-Hall of the citizens of London London 1739 [Robins, Benjamin.] A narrative of what passed in the Common-Hall of the citizens of London, assembled for the election of a lord-mayor, on Saturday the 29th of September, on Monday the 1st, and on Tuesday the 2d of October. Together with a defence of these proceedings, both as reasonable and agreeable to the practice of former times. London: printed for T. Cooper, 1739. (2)34 pp. 8vo, disbound. First edition. Normal election procedures for a new lord-mayor were overturned, because the obvious candidate had expressed his support for Robert Walpole's highly unpopular attempt to avoid war with Spain. The author of this account was a skilled mathematician and military engineer (see DNB), one of whose books was translated into German by Euler. Robins wrote several such tracts in the Tory interest. This one is scarce; the ESTC (on-line, 07/01) lists twelve locations (L, C, Lu, O, National Trust; CaOKQ, CtY, CLU-C, ICU, IU, MnU, PU).
