'I send you these few lines to comfort you; I should have sent you some money before, but I hope, my dear child, you will forgive me, as you hope to be forgiven in heaven. There you will find a better father than you have found in me. Be as happy as you can; you are going to happiness, and leave me behind to be miserable. I hope you will die happy, because you know you are innocent. Thou art now going, I shall soon follow thee. I hope you will meet your dear mother in heaven. As we shall soon part in this world, may my prayers be heard for you in heaven!

[Home] [Quick List] [Alphabetical List] [Category List] ... [Pirate Links] Bartholomew Roberts plunders the Samuel On May 29, 1720, Captain Samuel Cary of the merchant ship Samuel left the port of London bound for Boston with a cargo of ironware, forty-five barrels of gunpowder, and an assortment of English goods in bales and trunks. She had a crew of ten men to work the ship, and carried several passengers. All would have been fine had she not fallen under the guns of Black Bart the scourge of the seas. On July 13 the (Vessel's Name) Samuel was forty miles east of the banks of Newfoundland when two ships hove in sight. (Captain's Name) Captain Cary watched their approach with increased concern, and his worst fears were confirmed when the two ships fired their guns and hoisted pirate flags. The larger vessel was a three-masted ship of about 220 tons and was armed with twenty-six guns. From her main topmast head she flew a black flag on which a skull and cutlass were clearly visible. The flag of the dreaded pirate Bartholomew Roberts. The smaller vessel was an 80-ton sloop of ten guns flying a Union flag emblazoned with four blazing balls. Captain Cary reconed that there were about one hundred men on board each of the vessels, which meant that he and his crew were outnumbered by twenty to one. The Samuel had only six guns mounted on carriages, so she was completely out-gunned as well.

He was listed as unmarried, and head of his household. He was living with Mary , a 28 year old unmarried Native. On June 12, 1883, David married Mary Isabella Martin , the 22 year-old daughter of Jonathan Martin , an established Gabriola settler. Her mother was recorded as "Kelly of Stikene" on the marriage certificate. The wedding took place at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Nanaimo, the Rev. J.B. Good officiating. Within the next seven years, David and Mary Isabella had four sons all born on Mudge Island; on May 3, 1884, Llewellyn Martin ; on January 10, 1886

The second Samuel B. Roberts ( DD-823) was laid down on 27 June 1945 by the Consolidated Steel Corp. Orange, Texas; launched on 30 November 1945, sponsored by Mrs. Samuel B. Roberts, and commissioned on 22 December 1946, Comdr. C. T. Doss in command.
Samuel B. Roberts operated in the Atlantic and Caribbean from early 1953 until 3 August 1954, when she headed for the western Pacific, via the Panama Canal, to begin an around the world cruise. She spent five months in the waters around Japan and the Philippines, then sailed across the Indian Ocean and through the Suez Canal, arriving home on 14 March 1955. The remainder of 1955 was spent in local operations with the exception of a hastily ordered voyage in July to a lifeguard station off Greenland during President Eisenhower's flight to Geneva.
Western Atlantic operations in early 1956 gave way to foreign duty when Roberts again joined the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean on 27 September. On 25 October, Roberts weighed anchor for the Persian Gulf and duty with the Middle East Force. She transited the Suez Canal on the night of 27 and 28 October, the last warship to transit the canal southbound before it was closed during the invasion of Egypt. The ship was then on duty with the Middle East Force until sailing for home by way of Pakistan, India, East Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, and Brazil. Roberts arrived in Newport on 14 March 1957.

USS Samuel B Roberts completes highly successful six-month deployment to Eastern Pacific By Ensign Jamie Lehto
U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command NAVAL STATION MAYPORT, Fla.- USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58) returned to Mayport, Fla., March 19 after completing a six-month deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command Area of Responsibility. Interdicting 10.7 metric tons of cocaine and detaining 29 suspected drug traffickers, Roberts carried out the most seizures by any Navy ship during a single deployment: five. Beginning deployment on September 25, SBR set sail with the Silverbacks of HSL-44 DET 7 and USCG Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 401. After departing Mayport, the frigate immediately turned south and transited the Panama Canal, bound for a counter drug patrol in the Eastern Pacific. On station less than a fortnight, the wardroom and crew was rewarded with its first, much anticipated drug bust, seizing nearly 3 metric tons of cocaine and detaining 8 men. Just a week later, Roberts located a vessel outside of designated fishing grounds operating without navigation lights. After requesting and receiving permission to board the vessel from JIATF South, the agency responsible for counter drug operations in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean waters, embarked USCG personnel from LEDET 401 went aboard to investigate. The fishing vessel had a hidden compartment containing over 2200 kilograms of cocaine. The eight Colombian men were taken aboard as detainees.

http://www.colmusart.org/html/s04exhibitions04.shtml
Visitors to the Museum's permanent collection galleries will find four Focus Galleries dedicated to changing installations of works not ordinarily on view - three on the second floor, and one on the main floor. When the Museum's galleries were in the design stage, the staff wanted to set aside these Focus Galleries as places where visitors would always be able to find new and unknown "treasures" from the collections.
There are four small exhibitions that highlight aspects of the permanent collection and our current special exhibition. Please be sure to visit these installations the next time you're in the museum:
January 8 - August 8, 2004 Photography of Richard Samuel Roberts
(Focus Gallery 2) Roberts, an African-American living in Columbia, maintained a photography studio in the heart of the segregated city's African-American commercial district during the 1920s and 1930s. His clientele was, for the most part, Columbia's black population, and he photographed every facet of his community including bankers, teachers, social workers and even magicians. At a time when American society often presented stereotyped images of African-Americans in films and advertisements, Roberts amassed a sophisticated body of portraits that revealed the sensitivity, individuality and intelligence of his subjects.
Roberts' mastery of light and his concern for the details of each sitting resulted in moving portraits that emphasized the medium's aesthetic qualities. Roberts designed and constructed most of his studio equipment including the posing chair that was designed so the back, arms and decorative finial could be taken off to suit each particular portrait. This selection of images of women and children from the museum's collection is evidence of his passion for the finished product.
