Richard S. Roberts The birth of Richard Samuel Roberts in 1880 is celebrated on this date. He was an African-American still photographer.
From South Carolina, he was a self-taught photographer; Roberts operated his own studio in Fernandina, Florida, where he gained a reputation as a portrait maker. Success was achieved as a result of long hours of study that could only be done after he had finished his day's work as a stevedore and later as a fireman laborer. He read books and magazines on photography, becoming familiar with the nuances of lighting, angles, shadows and backgrounds. His dream was to become a master portrait-maker, with every picture a true reproduction of the subject.
Roberts and his wife moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 1920. Working as a post office custodian, he soon rented a studio on Washington Street in 1922. For the next 14 years, the thousands of pictures that Roberts took comprise a stunning visual history of every aspect of the African-American community in South Carolina's capital city. He frequently took his camera into the heart of the segregated black District of Columbia an also to other towns and cities in the state. He did not, however, restrict his photography to African-Americans. He made portraits of all people, regardless of race or economic conditions. Roberts was an innovator and a perfectionist.

In the afternoon, Roberts walked to the heart of the segregated city's African-American commercial district, where he maintained a photography studio. Roberts' clientele was, for the most part, Columbia's black population. He photographed every facet of his community including bankers, teachers, social workers and even magicians. At a time when American society often presented stereotyped images of African-Americans in films and advertisements, Roberts amassed a sophisticated body of portraits which revealed the sensitivity, individuality and intelligence of his subjects. Samuel Johnson by Sir S. C. Roberts Chapter I SAMUEL Johnson was born at Lichfield on 18 September 1709 He died in London on 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. SAMUEL JOHNSON is more vivid to us in a book written by another man than in any of the books that he wrote himself. Such is the penalty of being the subject of the greatest biography in the language, with the further result that many readers tend to separate Johnson the writer from Johnson the man as displayed by Boswell. http://www.sidneymuseum.ca/Pnr_rbts.htm
Samuel Roberts was born in Wales in 1833. Hearing news of the 1859 Cariboo gold rush, Samuel and his brothers left Wales for North America. Though his passage was paid to New Caledonia (now British Columbia), Samuel and his fellow passengers found themselves stranded in New York City. After selling a chest of tools Samuel was able to make his way to Pittsburgh and find work in the coal mines. Eventually, he traveled to the Mississippi and headed down river to New Orleans. This was a difficult journey, as the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 had brought river traffic to a virtual halt. Soon after his arrival in New Orleans, Samuel sailed to the Isthmus of Panama and walked overland to the west coast of Mexico. He then sailed to Victoria by way of San Francisco. Arriving in 1862, the 29 year old spent only a short time in Victoria before paddling his canoe to Yale. Along with other gold seekers, Samuel relayed his supplies over the 480 mile Cariboo trail to Barkerville. During the journey Samuel joined forces with Henry Brackman. Together they made their strike and secured shares in claims on the famous Williams and Lightning Creeks. Samuel labored for ten summers in Barkerville and worked in the coal mines in Nanaimo during the winter months. It was also in Nanaimo that he met his bride, Agnes Gough. Agnes's parents had arrived at Esquimalt from England on November 23, 1854 aboard the Princess Royal along with twenty-three other families. At Esquimalt the families transferred to the ships Beaver and Recovery which arrived in Nanaimo four days later. Agnes was about 15 years old at the time of her marriage to Samuel. They were married in Victoria's Wesleyan Church on December 16, 1871. It is rumoured that they traveled to Victoria by canoe.
