About Destroyer Escorts The destroyer escort class of ship came into existence as a less expensive ocean escort against the submarine threat. When opportunity provided, the destroyer escort could itself fulfill the mission of the destroyer by attacking surface ships with guns and torpedoes and serving as scout ships of the fleet. No better example of this attack capability can be given than that of the Battle off Samar. In 1975 all Destroyer Escorts then in commission were redesignated Frigates (FF) and the type name "DE" was discontinued by the US Navy. ( source: Destroyers Online Basic statistics

USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) deployed on Sept. 25, 2003. The Roberts set sail with the Silverbacks of Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 44 Det. 7 and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 401. After departing Mayport, the frigate immediately turned south and transited the Panama Canal, bound for a counter-drug patrol in the Eastern Pacific. In total, the Roberts Interdicted 10.7 metric tons of cocaine and detaining 29 suspected drug traffickers, and carried out the most seizures by any Navy ship during a single deployment: five. The Samuel B. Roberts returned to Mayport, Fla., March 19, 2004 after completing a six-month deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command Area of Responsibility.
The shield is divided into navy blue, red and yellow, suggesting the shoreline of Guadalcanal and the Marines who were trapped there in September 1942. The three stars allude to the Naval Forces who volunteered to rescue the hard-pressed Marines. The gold star represents Coxswain Samuel B. Roberts, Jr., who was mortally wounded during this mission when his boat drew enemy fire away from the other boats embarking the Marines. The three stars also represent the three ships named for Samuel B. Roberts, Jr.; the gold star denotes the current ship.

Samuel B. Roberts Intercepts 7,000-lb. Drug Shipment
In-Depth Coverage Navy Newsstand Story Number: NNS040109-01 Release Date: 1/9/2004 2:13:00 PM By Ensign Jaime Lehto, USS Samuel B. Roberts Public Affairs ABOARD USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS, At Sea (NNS) USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58), working with Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) 403, recently detained eight suspected drug traffickers and recovered more than 7,000 lbs. of cocaine from an ablaze vessel while at the mid-point of a record-setting counter-drug deployment. Roberts was ordered to intercept and question a suspicious vessel that was being tracked by the ship’s embarked helicopter, Magnum 450, from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron, Light (HSL) 44 Det. 7. But initial attempts to establish communications received no response. Finally, the suspected vessel sent a message stating there was an emergency aboard and that the vessel was taking on water. Immediately, the LEDET headed to the vessel aboard Robert’s Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB), while the bridge watchstanders monitored the vessel for signs of an emergency. Abruptly, and to the dismay of Robert’s crew, the smell of fuel oil became evident, even from a distance of several hundred yards. While the RHIB was approaching, men aboard the suspect vessel lowered a raft. When the RHIB was alongside the vessel, LEDET team members quickly embarked to ensure it was not taking on water. Suddenly, one suspect threw a Molotov cocktail, immediately engulfing the wooden fishing vessel in flames. From the magnitude of the flames, it was clear the men had spread fuel oil throughout the vessel in an attempt to destroy it and the evidence suspected to be aboard. The members of the LEDET team quickly debarked the vessel without incident, but minutes later, a huge explosion erupted as the fire reached one of the fuel tanks.

Mr. Rix and his wife were members of the First Church, Salem, from which they both withdrew, June 6, 1703, the year he went to Preston, Conn. He went to Stonington, Conn., in the summer of 1703, but bought the same year a large tract of land in Preston of Joseph and Ephraim Minor. In Preston, and near his farm, is an old burying ground known as the "Rixtown burying grounds," where many of the family are buried. The old homestead had remained in the family until about 1880, when it passed to others, but, as a correspondent wrote, "The farm is there still." November 22, 1727, James deeded to his son, Thomas Rix, "for in ye consideration of ye natural love, good will and fatherly affection that I bear to my loving and dutiful son Thomas Rix of Preston, a certain tenement and housing and lands, being two-thirds of ye farm that I now live upon, reserving to myself and my wife Margaret part of ye house."
