In 1913 Peter Gallagher came to this house for assistance when mortally wounded in 1913. For many years it was occupied by local legend and Kaul Clay foreman Iroe Dibler. On August 8, 1913 John Gallagher walked from Betula to Clermont. That road, still passable by foot or four-wheel drive vehicle, had been construced years earlier so persons in the in the Betula and Norwich area could reach Clermont; it parallels Brewers Run, exitting near the Hoover residence on the back road to Betula. Gallagher, an Irishman from Emporium, was employed by the United Natural Gas Company, and had spent the day building a pipeline. After a hard day's work, he was looking for excitement.

Family Crests and Coats of Arms: the Heraldic Artist
We have researched the Ringrose family crest in the most recognized sources of coats of arms. Before an artist or craftsman can render a Coat of Arms, it must exist. In other words the arms must have been designed and recorded by the heralds from time immemorial. Heraldic designs matriculated by the lay-artist in many cases becomes uninspired, meretricious and even ugly... More
Family Crests and Coats of Arms: Timeline
Many of the symbols adopted into armory have been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians, but heraldry itself did not begin until the 11th century. In continental Europe, the most ancient recorded Coat-of-Arms was discovered upon the monumental effigy of a Count of Wasserburg in the church of St. Emeran, at Ratisobon, Germany...

John Coxon and Company The enterprising freebooters didn’t stay long in port, however. A few months later, in December 1679, Sharp and Coxon joined forces joined forces with four other buccaneer captains, Maggott, Allison, Row and Essex in a venture even more ambitious. They sailed from Port Morant with Governor Carlisle’s permission, despite the fact that these men were all notorious buccaneers. Their declared intention of heading for the coast of Panama to cut log wood was an obvious sham. The piratical fleet strengthened by the addition of Captain Cooke, an English seaman and Captain Lessone, a French buccaneer, headed straight for Portobelo. The vision of Manila galleons, ablaze with treasure crammed in the hold and piled high on the decks, shimmered before them as they slogged sixty miles through rough country toward Portobelo from their anchored ships. Three days they had no food and many of the men had their "feet cut with rocks for want of shoes," but on the fourth day spirits soared as the church spires of Portobelo appeared ahead of them. Once again, the Spanish were caught with their guard down. The town was taken, sacked and abandoned in haste since the buccaneers feared the arrival of reinforcements. Each looter received a measly share of one hundred pieces of eight; disappointing but not depressing since greater prizes lay ahead. Captain Sawkins and Captain Harris joined the buccaneers as they began their trek across the Isthmus with a contingent of Indian guides. Two captains and a number of men left to guard the buccaneer fleet and the 331 who were to march each received several "doughboys" or large loaves of bread and orders to drink from the rivers. Each buccaneer was armed with a rifle, pistol, and a sword, and they marched in military formation, each company falling in behind its captain and standard. The first of these seven led by Captain Sharp whose flag was red with white and green streamers.

Overview What's New Bourne and Around Focus ... Feedback Prominent people associated with Bourne
past and present HEREWARD THE WAKE (flourished 1070) lead the Saxon uprising against the invaders after the Norman Conquest of 1066 although little factual information about his life survives. There seems no doubt that he did cause problems for the Normans but his reputation rests mainly with the many fictional accounts of his exploits, particularly the colourful descriptions of him ridding Bourne of the invading army while the story of his death in Bourne Wood at the hands of the enemy is undoubtedly apocryphal. ROBERT MANNING (1264-1340) is perhaps the most notable of all our citizens in that he is credited with putting the speech of the ordinary people of his time into the recognisable form that we have today.
