Nothing is known of Jean Richer equinoxes . Also in 1670 he set out on a voyage to Canada (France controlled parts of the country). On the voyage he had the task of testing two clocks made by Huygens . Accurate clocks were important in determining longitude. However there was a storm and Huygens 's clocks stopped. On his return Richer reported the failure of the clocks to Huygens Huygens accused Richer of incompetence but this was certainly untrue. Richer had made many important observations on the voyage and the problem with Huygens 's clocks was certainly not his fault. In 1671 Richer was sent on an expedition to Cayenne, French Guyana by the French Government. His first task there was to measure the parallax of Mars and the observations were to be compared with that taken at other sites to compute the distance to the planet. This data enabled the scale of the solar system to be computed, the first reasonably accurate results to be found.

The following year Richer was selected to travel to Cayenne to make observations useful for navigation. Two years later illness forced Richer to return to Paris. For unknown reasons he was transferred from active service with the Académie des Sciences to fortifications and military construction with the title of royal engineer.
Richer's only written work is his "Observations astronomiques et physiques faites en l'isle de Caienne" published in the Mémoires of the Académie.
Richer's astronomical observations of a lunar eclipse and the satellites of Jupiter led to the determination of the longitude of Cayenne which was three minutes too big. His observations of Mars at perigee with corresponding observations made elsewhere led to the calculation of a fairly close approximation to the fundamental astronomical unit as well as the parallax of Mars and the Sun. In geodesy Richer's observation of the length of the seconds pendulum improved the understanding of the shape of the earth as a spheroid flattened at the poles.

In 1745 Montucla's grandmother died and at this point he went to Toulouse where he began to study law. After completing his studies at Toulouse, he decided to go to Paris which would be the most suitable place to gain further legal training. There he became friends with Diderot, Lalande and d'Alembert d'Alembert and Diderot set Montucla on the road of publishing on the history of mathematics. His first work was Histoire des recherches sur la quadrature du cercle which was published by Jombert in Paris in 1754, and the high regard in which this work was held can be judged by the fact that on the strength of this work alone Montucla was elected a corresponding member of the Berlin Academy. Although the history of the problem of squaring the circle has changed greatly since Montucla's day this book is still a classic of its kind. Already at this time he was working on his masterpiece, and in 1754 he announced that it would be published at a future date. He was undertaking a very major task, one which had never really been undertaken in this form before, and four years would pass before publication. Montucla needed an income to allow him to pursue his research interests and around this time he worked at the
