The Richardson Blue Grouse Craig Springer The history and science behind the Richardson blue grouse. With the onset of spring, both sexes move to lower elevations to breed. Cock birds take up station in flat, open stands of aspen-ponderosa pine woods and begin advertising themselves to potential mates and competing suitors. With a fanned tail slightly cocked, wings drooped and purple neck sacs inflated, the cocks proclaim their territory with a five-note series of oops, oops, oops, oops, oops repeated about every 30 seconds or so. Those lucky enough to hear it liken the call to a distant, hollow cooing that is barely audible beyond 80 or 90 feet. Vivid yellow eye-combs stand out as the cock bobs his head up and down in front of his potential mate. Once a young cock bird establishes a territory, he will hold it for life up to 14 years returning there every spring to court hens. After breeding, the hen builds a nest in a shallow depression lining it with fine grasses, pine needles, and leaves. To protect her young from the elements and would-be predators like foxes and weasels, the hen usually puts the nest near shrubbery or against a tree trunk. She lays seven to 10 eggs, and without assistance from the cock bird, incubates them for about 25 days. The chicks hatch in mid-June and almost immediately start eating young plant shoots. Within a week the mottled chicks flutter short lengths reminiscent of a grasshopper flitting about on tall grass.

News of Former Colleagues
Lewis Richardson Lewis Richardson's great-nephew, Professor JCR Hunt, FRS, of the Department of Space and Climate Physics at University College and a member of the House of Lords, wrote the following letter to Nature: 'The recent decisions of the US government to enlarge its missile defence systems, followed by the response of other countries in Asia who have described this as a threatening move, has raised the question of whether a new global arms race is about to begin. It is 50 years since Nature published the letter of Lewis Fry Richardson (1951) in which he asked the question whether the third major arms race of the twentieth century would inevitably lead to a world war, because the two previous arms races had done so. 'He had developed a simple model of coupled differential equations which showed how the expenditure on armaments of the antagonistic nations had grown exponentially before the first and second world wars. This led to this prediction that there would be a second world war (ie when the armaments of both sides would be dangerously large) in a letter to Nature in 1935... 'The question now is what kind of prediction would result from Richardson's armament models when applied to the current situation which may, as some leading defence experts have stated, be the beginning of a new arms race. The future development is quite uncertain because the model equations tend to show great sensitivity to small variations in relative armaments at this critical stage in the system.'

    b. circa 1818, d. 1906 JESSE RICHARD SMITH Letter from Sherry Thompson, posted to The Gililland Family forum, www.MyFamily.com, 5 Jul 2001: "To my Smith Cousins, Last night at 3:00 a.m. when I couldn't sleep because I knew I had more information on Jesse R. Smith. I went crazy tearing through my packed boxes. I was looking for a letter that my uncle Benjamin Billups wrote to me in 1969. I found it. He had been doing research on Jesse Smith for 8 years. Jesse was his great grandfather. He died in 1978 and I know that he had quite a lot of information. I am sad to say it is lost to me but this might help you in our search. I am going to copy this to you word for word. Here Goes! Jesse Richard Smith was born in 1820 in Alabama, of parents, both of whom were born in North Carolina. Family legend says he was in Texas prior to the War of Independence; that he was the oldest boy in the wagon trains fleeing across the Trinity ahead of the Mexican Army under Santa Ana; that he was later a bridge guard.

Sid Richardson Collection of Western Art Fort Worth, TX http://www.sidrmuseum.org/ T he Sid Richardson Collection of Western Art in Fort Worth, Texas, features a magnificent collection of paintings by the premier artists of the American West, Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell . On permanent display are 56 paintings from the personal collection of the late oilman and philanthropist Sid W. Richardson. Richardson became interested in western art in the 1940's and asked Bertram M. Newhouse, president of Newhouse Galleries in New York City, to form a collection of western pictures for him. The gallery continued as his principal source from 1942 until 1947, during which time he acquired the majority of his paintings. Today, Richardson's complete collection is owned the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, which maintains offices above the museum. The foundation's trustees chose the museum's site both for its convenience to downtown visitors and workers and for the historic atmosphere of the area. The museum is located in Sundance Square, an area of restored turn-of-the-century buildings containing shops, restaurants, theatres and museums in the heart of downtown Fort Worth. The building is a replica of the original 1895 structure which was rebuilt after it was damaged by fire in 1980. (Right: Portrait of Sid Richardson , by Peter Hurd (1903-1984), 1958, oil on panel, 32 x 48 inches) In 1982, the museum opened it doors with 16 Remingtons and 34 Rusells on permanent display, Since then, several Remington paintings have been added to the collection.

Bowling Green, OH Richardson's potential was used for a very successful calculation of the properties of charmonium and the upsilon system . This calculation also included the effects of the perturbative spin-dependent potentials to the full radiative one-loop level. To generalize the framework of this calculation to include the B c system, one must make assumptions about the flavor dependence of the potential parameters. One of the simplest such assumptions is that all of the flavor dependence is carried by the constituent masses. However, we find it necessary to attribute flavor dependence to the renormalization scales and coupling constants that arise at the one-lop level. The question of whether these are consistent with an underlying QCD scale parameter is addressed. The relationship of the scale parameter derived from the spin-dependent potentials to that of the short-range part of Richardson's potential is considered. Energies of the low-lying S and P states of the B c system are calculated as well as the pseudoscalar decay constant. Comparison with the recent results of Eichten and Quigg
