Had these reforms gone through, the Revolution probably would never have happened. These reforms, however, were the cause of the agitation by the Parlements Parlements were, of course, made up largely of nobility who would have to pay the new tax.

, which have the authority to raise taxes, want something in return: more regional independence. The aristocracy won't budge on the matter; when Louis calls a select group of nobles together to sell him on the reforms, they flat out refuse to consider the matter. They insist, rather, that the only legislative body that can approve the new taxes is the Estates General, which hadn't been called since 1614.

SOCIOBIOLOGY: THE NEW RELIGION
Dr. Richard J. Blackwell Department of Philosophy St. Louis University [This paper was presented at the ITEST Conference on The State of the Art in March, 1980. Dr. Blackwell is well versed in the philosophy of science and has written many papers on various aspects of that field.] In 1971 E.O. Wilson, a prominent entomologist at Harvard, published a book entitled The Insect Societies . In the last chapter of that book Wilson suggested that it may be fruitful to attempt to extend to the world of vertebrate animals the set of principles which he had found to be operative in the intricate behaviors of social insects. Following his own advice, he published four years later his enormous study entitled Sociobiology: The New Synthesis . The twenty-seventh and last chapter of that book recommended the fur- ther extension of these same principles to the human species. The result was a third book, On Human Nature , which appeared in 1978.

Obituary published in theSociety for American Archaeology newsletter. Work on Hudson Bay forts in the Northwest, mission sites in the Southwest, Meductic site in Canada, and Jamestown, made Caywood one of the early practitioners of North American historical archaeology.

Louis Richard Caywood
V eteran archaeologist Louis R. Caywood died of pneumonia in Globe, Ariz., on April 30, 1997, at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Winifred (Brett), and sons Richard F., of Boston, and Robert L., of Phoenix. Born in Bisbee, Ariz., six years before Arizona became a state, Caywood received a BS degree in business administration in 1932 from the University of Arizona, and the following year, an MA in anthropology under the aegis of Dean Byron Cummings. In June 1934 he began a 34-year career with the National Park Service (NPS) as a temporary summer ranger at Mesa Verde. Caywood's career as a practicing archaeologist had begun in 1933 as a pioneer in the implementation of Federal Emergency Relief fieldwork at Tuzigoot, the 13th-century A.D. pueblo in the Verde Valley near Clarkdale, with Edward H. Spicer, another University of Arizona graduate student. By July 1935 the fieldwork and ruin stabilization had been completed with Civil Works Administration labor, and a 119-page illustrated report published by Caywood and Spicer through the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and NPS, the latter now Caywood's full-time employer. This stands as a speed record for excavation and publication by any unit of Federal Relief archaeology in the 1930s and 1940s. Tuzigoot became a National Monument in 1940. Continuing an enviable record of producing reports, most of them limited mimeographed issues by the NPS, Caywood supervised excavations at Fort Vancouver, Fort Spokane, and Fort Okanagan, Washington, for the western region of the NPS. In 1954-1955 he was assigned to Colonial National Historical Park to work at the site of the 17th-century English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, and was loaned to the Jamestown 350th Anniversary Commission to excavate Governor Berkeley's Greenspring plantation house and grounds near Jamestown.

St. Louis Hegelians
It was there that Harris and Brokmeyer met in 1858 at the St. Louis Mercantile Library, where Harris was offering a public lecture. Brokmeyer convinced Harris of the significance of Hegel's system, and its relevance to the historical trends of American society. They immediately joined forces, attracting a number of other youthful followers with intellectual ambitions, many of whom were, like Harris, teachers in the public schools. The nascent Hegelian movement was temporarily stalled when Brokmeyer went off to serve as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War, but it rebounded in full force upon his return with the formation of the St. Louis Philosophical Society in 1866, and the launching of the Journal of Speculative Philosophy, the official organ of the Society, in 1867. Brokmeyer was the acknowledged intellectual leader of the movement. He published little, but his charismatic personality, quixotic meliorism, and extraordinary skills in argument and debate, consistently employed in the application of Hegelian dialectical logic, established his status as the framer of the ideals and aims of the movement. The manuscript of his translation of Hegel's Logic

Not only did Louis, his wife Mary and their second son Richard make the key discoveries that shaped our understanding of human origins, but they also inspired a generation of researchers (myself included) to pick up where they left off. I recall with great fondness my first visit to Nairobi in 1970 when Louis ceremoniously led me to the room housing the crown jewels of human evolution. Every fossil took on a mythical cast as he waxed eloquent about how it revealed some magic moment of our origins. Here he was, the grand master, sharing his passion, knowledge and intuition with a new disciple. He was often like that: generous, open, supportive, always trying to win new converts to his way of working, his way of interpreting the past.

Francis Patrick and Peter Richard Kenrick
Archbishops respectively of Baltimore, Maryland, and of St. Louis, Missouri. They were sons of Thomas Kenrick and his wife Jane, and were born in the older part of the city of Dublin, Ireland, the first-named on 3 December, 1797, and the second on 17 August, 1806. An uncle, Father Richard Kenrick was for several years parish priest of St. Nicholas of Myra in the same city, and he cultivated carefully the quality of piety which he observed at an early age in both children. I. FRANCIS PATRICK KENRICK Francis Patrick was sent by his uncle to a good classical school, and at the age of eighteen was selected as one of those who were to go to Rome to study for the priesthood. Here he became deeply impressed with the gentle bearing of Pius VII , who had just then been restored to his capital after long imprisonment by Napoleon Bonaparte In 1829 he attended the Provincial Council of Baltimore as theologian to Bishop Flaget, and was appointed secretary to the assembly. There, among the other weighty subjects, had to be considered the distracted state of the Diocese of Philadelphia, then labouring under the troubles begotten of the Hogan schism.
