VIEW POINTS Banners Brunelleschi's Secret in constructing the Cupola of Florence Cathedral Arch. Massimo Ricci Prof. Massimo Ricci , Italian, was born the 13th of May 1946. Architect and instructor at the University of Florence. Educated in Italy; graduated in Architecture (magna cum laude) from the University of Florence and president of the research group T.S.A. Tecnologie Strutturali Antiche The cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore of Florence is the largest existing valuted structure built of bricks in the world, and it is among the most complex and ambitious structures that any man has ever built. It was begun in May of 1420 and finished in September of 1436. The base of the cupola begins at 55 metres above ground level and rises approximately 36 metres above this. Its total weight is about 25.000 tonnes. A monumental challenge The enormity of the cupola obliged its designer to invent an altogether new construction method, the usual procedures being useless. In the competition organized to select the architect for the construction, the only candidate to propose a unique method of construction was Filippo Brunelleschi (Filippo di Ser Brunellesco 1377.1446); however, given the unusual methodology he proposed and his insistence that he could not reveal his solution in its entirety, he was not believed and was summarily dismissed by the Council of the Dome, whose duty it was to assign the commission for constructing the cupola In fact, after other fruitless meetings of the Dome commission, no competitor was able to propose a valid solution to this project, and so it was entrusted to Filippo Brunelleschi inscrire his having to reveal his secret. In the centuries that followed, many scientific minds, notably Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Ximenes, Sanpaolesi and others, attempted to explain the secret of the cupola without success. In 1977, the 500th anniversary of the death of Brunelleschi, Arch. Massimo Ricci began to experience a strong desire to try to find his explanation. He discovered Brunelleschi's method used to overcome his exceptional difficulties. In addition to this, for an accurate hypothesis as to how to restore the cracks that have developed in the cupola, one must understand the method used to construct it.

Mediateca Roma: sezione video e concorso VideoRoma Mediateca Roma - archivio multimediale dell’Istituzione delle Biblioteche del Comune di Roma - è per il quinto anno presente al Festival Arcipelago. Nel corso delle precedenti edizioni le due realtà, ciascuna con le proprie peculiarità, hanno potuto verificare con successo forme di collaborazione, che hanno arricchito la programmazione del Festival e rafforzato il ruolo della Mediateca come struttura che opera per la promozione del linguaggio audiovisivo. Il rapporto con un festival come Arcipelago è, per un archivio audiovisivo, assolutamente proficuo e necessario. Anche quest’anno Mediateca Roma presenta una propria sezione video ed il concorso VideoRome. Il catalogo della Mediateca è attualmente costituito da circa 1500 titoli e liberamente visionabile presso la sede di via dei Fienili, 95 (info:066786024 - 0669293776). Il fondo è costituito da materiale che proviene dal settore dell’home video (lungometraggi repertorio cinematografico di fiction italiana e non) e dall’ambito televisivo. Lorenzo Ricci. During this period of tense relations between Portugal and the Vatican, On May 21, 1758, General Congregation XIX elected the 55 year old Florentine, Lorenzo Ricci, to head the Society. Earlier, on the same month, on the 3rd, Benedict XIV died and Clemens XIII, his successor, had given clear evidence that he trusted the Society. Ricci became Superior General of the Society when the Church was suffering a sharp defeat. Several Generals before him, especially Aquaviva and Tamburini, had experienced long periods of anguish, but none endured, in intensity or duration, what Ricci was about to go through: the Society gradually dismembered and eventually murdered. The execution of the Society began in Portugal, who acted first, in 1759; then France, in 1764; Spain in 1767; then Naples and Parma. The papal suppression throughout the world came in 1773. Portugal . An attempt was made on the king's, Jose I, life. The king was fired at and wounded returning from a visit to his mistress on September 3, 1758. The Duque D'Aveiro, the De Tavora family and other high personages were blamed, tried and executed for conspiracy. The Jesuits were also accused. On January 11, 1759, 10 Jesuits were arrested, 6 days later the king ordered that all Jesuit property be confiscated. However, the Jesuits were saved by the Vatican who believed in their innocence. Nevertheless, the Portuguese cardinal, Saldanha, informed the pope that he had decided, in view of the corrupt state of the Society, to invoke the secular power.

Tirso Gonzalez. In June, 1687, the delegates of the 13th General Congregation gathered in Rome. The spiritual climate of the Church during those years was moral theology. Frequently used words were laxism and rigorism. Earlier, in 1676, pope Innocent XI had condemned 65 propositions which favored laxism. Four years later, he issued a decree in defense of the probabiliorism of Tirso Gonzalez, a Spanish Jesuit who, in 1687, was chosen as a delegate to the Congregation. So, when the Congregation assembled, the pope made it very clear that he wanted two things: first, the election of Gonzalez as General; and second, a decree stating that Jesuits were free to defend probabiliorism. The Congregation did as the pope wished. However, the Society, by his choice of Gonzalez who had never been a superior, was about to live through 18 years of severe distress and tension. The new General brought to his post a deeply rooted obsession, he personally felt that he would be guilty of serious sin if he could not wipe away "laxity", the stain of what was the common teaching of Jesuit moral theologians. To his last days, as an old man over 80, he always kept this goal before him. However, as General, he also fostered the foreign missions, he encouraged the genuine religious spirit that animated the Society, he fought strongly when the honor of a Jesuit was at stake.
