Subject: [HM] New Fermat stamp; m for slope (sorry) Author: JeffM@sanctum.com Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 17:50:29 -0400 On the occasion of his 400th birthday, France has just issued an interesting stamp depicting Fermat. I believe this is the first French stamp depicting Fermat. You can see it at http://www.geocities.com/mathstamps/ or http://jeff560.tripod.com/ (The above two websites are, for now, identical.) On an unrelated and, I suppose, inconsequential matter, I have been advised of a use of m for slope by Vincenzo Riccati. This of course is much earlier than the 1842 earliest use I was aware of. Riccati used y = mx + n. Some more information is at http://members.aol.com/jeff570/geometry.html Regards, Jeff Miller (happy to have found an excuse to plug my web pages....) The Math Forum

XXIII Convegno UMI-CIIM (Loano, Italy, 3-5 october 2002): author’s lecture STORIA DELLE SCIENZE PER LA DIDATTICA “Controversie” tra il XVII e il XVIII secolo Giorgio T. Bagni Dipartimento di Matematica, Università di Roma “La Sapienza” Abstract The History of Sciences is a very important tool for Didactics. In this paper we propose two historical examples: a mathematical one, based upon the debate about the logarithms of negative numbers ( xviii century); and a physical one regarding the introduction of the concepts of work and of kinetic energy based upon a geometric analogy according to Gian Maria Ciassi’s work (1654-1679). An important educational problem consists in the verify of the learning; so we expose an experimental research related to the mathematical example presented.

The Development of Analysis on the Continent
From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. L'Hospital Varignon De Montmort Nicole ... Fagnano Leaving for a moment the English mathematicians of the first half of the eighteenth century we come next to a number of continental writers who barely escape mediocrity, and to whom it will be necessary to devote but few words. Their writings mark the steps by which analytical geometry and the differential and integral calculus were perfected and made familiar to mathematicians. Nearly all of them were pupils of one or other of the two elder Bernoullis, and they were so nearly contemporaries that it is difficult to arrange them chronologically. The most eminent of them are Cramer de Gua De Montmort Fagnano l'Hospital Nicole Parent Riccati Saurin , and Varignon
    L'Hospital
, born in Paris in 1661, and died there on Feb. 2, 1704, was among the earliest pupils of John Bernoulli, who, in 1691, spent some months at l'Hospital's house in Paris for the purpose of teaching him the new calculus. It seems strange, but it is substantially true, that a knowledge of the infinitesimal calculus and the power of using it was then confined to Newton, Leibnitz, and the two elder Bernoullis - and it will be noticed that they were the only mathematicians who solved the more difficult problems then proposed as challenges. There was at that time no text-book on the subject, and the credit of putting together the first treatise which explained the principles and use of the method is due to l'Hospital; it was published in 1696 under the title

Earliest Uses of Symbols from Geometry
Last revision: August 26, 2001 Lettering of geometric figures. The designation of points, lines, and planes by a letter or letters was in vogue among the ancient Greeks and has been traced back to Hippocrates of Chios (about 440 B. C.) (Cajori vol. 1, page 420, attributed to Moritz Cantor). Lettering of triangles. Richard Rawlinson in a pamphlet prepared at Oxford sometime between 1655 and 1668 used A, B, C for the sides of a triangle and a, b, c for the opposite angles. In his notation, A was the largest side and C the smallest (Cajori vol. 2, page 162). Leonhard Euler and Thomas Simpson reintroduced this scheme many years later, Euler using it in 1753 in (Cajori vol 2., page 162). Euler used capital letters for the angles. In 1866, Karl Theodor Reye (1838-1919) proposed the plan of using capital letters for points, lower case letters for lines, and lower case Greek letters for planes in a remarkable two-volume work on geometry, Die Geometrie der Lage (Cajori vol. 1, page 423).

Math Words, pg 3 Back to Math Words Alphabetical Index Astroid The Astroid is the path of a point on a circle rolling inside another circle with a radius four times as large. The path is sometimes called a hypocycloid of four cusps because it is rolling under (hypo) the larger circle.
The word astroid, which seems to be a different spelling of asteroid, comes from the Greek aster for Star. It seems that the name was applied as late as the 1800's.
The parametric equation for an astroid with a circle of radius r rolling inside a circle of radius 4r is given by x(t)= 3r cos(t)+ r cos(3t), and y(t)= 3r sin(t)-r sin(3t). The figure can also be drawn with the equation x + y = R where R is the radius of the fixed circle, and R/4 is the radius of the rolling circle. This formula was known to Liebniz in 1715. The area of the astroid is 3/2 times the area of the rolling circle. It seems that the name astroid was not used until around 1836. Before that, and even afterward, it has gone by many names including tetracuspid (four cusps), cubocycloid, and paracycle. The length of the astroid is 6R and its area is 3 p R /8. Additional
