Osborne Reynolds 's father was a priest in the Anglican church but he had an academic background having graduated from Cambridge in 1837, being elected to a fellowship at Queens' College, and being headmaster of first Belfast Collegiate School and then Dedham School in Essex. In fact it was a family with a tradition of the Church and three generations of Osborne's father's family had been the rector of Debach-with-Boulge. Osborne was born in Belfast when his father was Principal of the Collegiate School there, but began his schooling at Dedham when his father was headmaster of the school in that Essex town. After that he received private tutoring to complete his secondary education. He did not go straight to university after his secondary education, however, but rather he took an apprenticeship with the engineering firm of Edward Hayes in 1861. Reynolds wrote (actually in his application for the chair in Manchester in 1868) of his father's influence on him while he was growing up (see for example Lamb 's article [8]):- In my boyhood I had the advantage of the constant guidance of my father, also a lover of mechanics, and a man of no mean attainments in mathematics and its application to physics.

    Election

By Phil Rooney The Associated Press Democrat Rollie Reynolds had nothing to lose when he met Republican Tom Osborne in North Platte on Sunday night in the only debate of their campaign for Nebraska's 3rd Congressional District seat. The 69-year-old real estate investor trails the popular retired Nebraska football coach by a wide margin in the polls to replace Republican Rep. Bill Barrett, who is retiring. Reynolds criticized Osborne as being a Lincoln resident and said it's time for someone with ties to agriculture to represent the 3rd District. "We're looking to elect two congressmen from the 1st District," Reynolds said. Osborne changed his official residence to his cabin in Lemoyne, near Lake McConaughy, after many years of living in Lincoln in the 1st District. Promising to be an advocate for the 3rd District, Osborne said he will focus on agriculture and family issues, including the district's loss of population.

    Introduction
The occasion of the centenary of the publication by the Royal Society of the paper `On the dynamical theory of incompressible viscous fluids and the determination of the criterion,' is an opportune moment to consider not only the paper itself but its place within the broader context of the complete works of its author, Osborne Reynolds. As a landmark contribution to the development of fluid mechanics the 1895 paper is without question the crowning achievement of Reynolds' long and distinguished career as the first Professor of Engineering at the University of Manchester. Indeed, the fact that one hundred years later the ideas contained in his paper remain central to current turbulent research and are widely used in the study of practical flows provides ample cause for celebration and underlines the continued relevance of this contribution. By means of a detailed examination of his body of work I hope to disclose not only the development and emergence of the lines of thought so definitively realised in 1895, but also give something of an overview of Reynolds' many and diverse scientif ic interests. Consequently, I have sought to categorise the considerable output of published material Reynolds produced during his thirty-seven years at Manchester (1868-1905) and to offer a short review, highlighting those contributions which have proved to be of particular importance.

    Papers on `Out-of-door Physics' (1870-1881)
This initial stream of Reynolds' work, which was described in the terms used above by his most famous student, J.J. Thomson, clearly stemmed from interests developed as a result of his background and experience prior to coming to Manchester. It was convenient as an initial area for research in view of the fact that little was available to him at that time in the way of laboratory and workshop facilities at Owens College. In addition it provided ideal material for lectures of general interest and popular appeal for presentation to the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. The papers on this aspect of his work, which are all to be found in Volume I of the Collected Works, deal with matters concerned with comets; the solar corona and the aurora; terrestrial magnetism; the electrical properties of clouds; the bursting of trees struck by lightning; the destruction of sound by fog; the refraction of sound by the atmosphere; the action of rain to calm the sea; the action of oil on water in preventing wind waves; surface tension and capillary action. He did not go straight to university after his secondary education, however, but rather he took an apprenticeship with the engineering firm of Edward Hayes in 1861. Reynolds, after gaining experience in the engineering firm, studied mathematics at Cambridge, graduating in 1867. As an undergraduate Reynolds had attended some of the same classes as Rayleigh who was one year ahead of him. As his father had before him, Reynolds was elected to a scholarship at Queens' College. He again took up a post with an engineering firm, this time the civil engineers John Lawson of London, spending a year as a practicing civil engineer. In 1868 Reynolds became the first professor of engineering in Manchester (and the second in England). Reynolds held this post until he retired in 1905. His early work was on magnetism and electricity but he soon concentrated on hydraulics and hydrodynamics. He also worked on electromagnetic properties of the sun and of comets, and considered tidal motions in rivers. After 1873 Reynolds concentrated mainly on fluid dynamics and it was in this area that his contributions were of world leading importance.
