The exhibition includes works by some of the most important portrait painters that America has produced, artists of such skill and talent that they were chosen to depict the most important figures of their day. The portraits in A Brush with History reflect the range of the National Portrait Gallery's collection from Charles Willson Peale 's 1769 likeness of Maryland publisher Anne Green, one of America's first woman publishers, to Andy Warhol 's 1984 pop art portrait of singer Michael Jackson. North Carolina Museum of History Raleigh, NC http://www.ncmuseumofhistory.org/ A Brush with History: Paintings from the National Portrait Gallery P ortraits have always spoken to our human desire to know each other. Before photography was invented in 1839, painted portraits, and engravings based on them, were one of the few ways to record likenesses of the nation's heroes and one's friends and family. Today, figurative painting remains as vital and expressive as portraits from any period. Seventy-five paintings representing more than 250 years of American portraiture will be on view in the exhibition A Brush with History: Paintings from the National Portrait Gallery at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. The collection of paintings from the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery highlights distinguished Americans who have shaped the history and culture of our country. The exhibit will run from January 27 to April 8, 2001. Early American Portraiture From the Colonial era through the 1820s, portraiture was the most widely practiced genre of American art, and it continued to be a significant form through the 19th century. The demand for likenesses was incessant, and portraiture was often the primary source of income for artists. Artists frequently made portraits of famous people to attract interest and potential patrons. In 1834

S UMMARY This exhibit tells the story of the African-American artists' quest for creative recognition in their chosen art forms. The story follows these artists via their early exposure to European art and genre paintings and respectfully following these rules in their learned crafts. Later, there is a fusion shown, using the European, African, and American cultural context in these artists' works. The exhibit is a visual presentation, along with historical text covering the early and recent achievements of these artists involved in the Visual Arts. Over 60 personalities are on display with biographical facts and information. Many examples of their creations are also represented. Included are: painters, sculptors, muralists, engravers, portraitists, print makers, illustrators, photographers, woodcut printers, lithographers, folk artists, and cartoonists. Books, pictures, photos, magazines, museum catalogs, visual crafts, [etc.] are on display. Library resources and established museums as focal reference art centers are included to enhance the viewers scope in seeking additional information on this subject. A bibliography is available upon request.

Occupation: Physician
His father was a surgeon.
As always, I assume affluence at least.
3. Nationality
Birth: French
Career: French
Death: French
4. Education
Schooling: Religous Order
Before 1676 nothing is known of Reyneau's life. He studied at the Oratorian college in Angers. In 1676 he entered the Maison d'Institution (Instruction?) in Paris, and was sent to the Collège de Toulon in 1679 by his superiors. Partly in view of this and partly in view of his subsequent career, I assume the equivalent of a B.A.
5. Religion
Affiliation: Catholic
He entered the Maison d'Institution in Paris in 1676, and was ordained a priest at the Collège de Toulon in 1681.
6. Scientific Disciplines
Primary: Mathematics
He is important historically as the author of a textbook, Analyse demontrée (Paris, 1708), which was designed to provide instruction in the new mathematics developed at the beginning of the 18th century. The book was written upon the request of Malebranche. Reyneau began working on the book in 1698 with two other Oratorians, Louis Byzance and Claude Jaquemet. Reyneau was very interested in the debates on the differential and infinitesimal calculus provoked by Rolle's work, but Reyneau had difficulty assimilating the new material.
Reyneau's lesser known works are La science du calcul, 2 vols., (1714-35) and a treatise on the art of navigating, Traité de la marine ou l'art de naviguer.

He was born into a prominent Provencal family.

4. Education
Schooling: Religous Order
He showed an early aptitude for philosophical and scientific studies and received an excellent education at Oratorian schools (he was a member of the order) at Aix, Marseilles, Arles, and, finally, Angers, where he studied under the mathematician Charles-René Reyneau during 1698-1699. I take this to have been at least the equivalent of a B.A.
Some time after 1704 he began to study mathematics and metaphysics with Malebranche and continued until 1715.
5. Religion
Affiliation: Catholic
Upon the death of his elder brother, his family looked to him to carry on the family affairs. Against his family's wishes he embraced an ecclesiastical life. He entered the Congregation of the Oratory around 1699.

The Many Faces of Paul Robeson Background Paul Robeson was all these things and more. He was the son of a former slave, born and raised during a period of segregation, lynching, and open racism. He earned a four-year scholarship to Rutgers University, making him the third African American to attend the school. There he was a member of the prestigious Cap and Skull Honor Society, played four varsity sports (baseball, football, basketball, and track), won speech and debate tournaments, and managed to graduate valedictorian of his class. After graduation, Robeson applied his athletic abilities to a short career in professional football. Aside from his prowess on the gridiron, he earned a law degree and changed the direction of his career. His legal career was cut short, however, after a secretary refused to take dictation from him solely because of the color of his skin. He left law and turned to his childhood love of acting and singing. Robeson starred in Shakespeare's

Billed as two separate shows, but gradually melting into one another, are exhibitions from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., called "A Brush with History" (an interesting use of English which may or may not be appreciated in Japan), and a selection of historical paintings and sublime landscapes called "American Heroism," from various American museums.
Statue of Liberty Enlightening the world by Edward P. Moran The gathered selection of these paintings was a major undertaking. It all started six years ago when President Bill Clinton promised Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama a major art exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty. The portraits of famous Americans offer the works of well known and some very famous artists. Seventy-five well-known personalities from all walks of American life, from Ben Franklin to Michael Jackson. A few of the paintings appeared as covers for Time magazine. Even though the subjects are all Americans, not all of the artists are. For example, the exciting portrait of the American painter Mary Cassatt was painted in Paris in the early 1880s by the French master Edgar Degas. The exhibit is a virtual who's who in American art and history. I found the paintings which were most stimulating were those which depict artists, poets, musicians and other intellectuals.
