In October 1676 he entered the Maison d'Institution in Paris where he met Malebranche In 1682 Reyneau was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Angers. However, in 1705, he had to give up teaching as be became deaf. He had been going deaf for a number of years but he managed to keep his post by having former students give his lectures for him. After giving up the struggle to continue his job in these difficult circumstances, Reyneau went to Paris and lived at the Oratorian house there for the rest of his life. This was a time when there were major new mathematical ideas coming through the work of Johann Bernoulli and being brought into France through and others. For many years Reyneau was not really abreast of these new developments, even when Johann Bernoulli visited Paris in 1692 and Reyneau did not rush to keep up to date with the important new ideas.

In 1705 he obtained a copy of Lecons prepared by Johann Bernoulli for . Reyneau lent some documents to Montmort who lost them. Eventually Reyneau completed his important calculus text (1708) from which d'Alembert learnt mathematics. As always, I assume affluence at least.
3. Nationality
Birth: French

Death: French
4. Education
Schooling: Religous Order
Before 1676 nothing is known of Reyneau's life. He studied at the Oratorian college in Angers. In 1676 he entered the Maison d'Institution (Instruction?) in Paris, and was sent to the Collège de Toulon in 1679 by his superiors. Partly in view of this and partly in view of his subsequent career, I assume the equivalent of a B.A.
5. Religion
Affiliation: Catholic
He entered the Maison d'Institution in Paris in 1676, and was ordained a priest at the Collège de Toulon in 1681.
6. Scientific Disciplines
Primary: Mathematics
He is important historically as the author of a textbook, Analyse demontrée (Paris, 1708), which was designed to provide instruction in the new mathematics developed at the beginning of the 18th century. The book was written upon the request of Malebranche. Reyneau began working on the book in 1698 with two other Oratorians, Louis Byzance and Claude Jaquemet. Reyneau was very interested in the debates on the differential and infinitesimal calculus provoked by Rolle's work, but Reyneau had difficulty assimilating the new material.

    BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
Drew, Charles Richard (June 3, 1904 - Apr. 1, 1950), surgeon, pioneer in the production, and preservation of blood plasma, was born in Washington, D.C., the eldest of the two sons and three daughters of Richard Thomas Drew and Nora Rosella (Burrell) Drew. His father, a high school graduate, was a carpet layer who earned only a modest income. Charles's mother was a graduate of Miner Normal School in Washington. Both parents were active members of the Baptist church and encouraged their children to get a good education. In the fall of 1928 Drew was admitted to the medical school of McGill University, Montreal, Canada. A loan from a group of his Amherst classmates supplemented his earnings as a waiter, and in his third year he was given a scholarship. Although he continued to excel in sports, he increasingly devoted himself to his medical studies. He had the good fortune to gain the friendship of a young English doctor, John Beattie, who taught bacteriology. Through Beattie, Drew became interested in blood groups and in the research of Karl Landsteiner. In 1933 Drew received the degrees of M.D. and C.M. (Master of Surgery). He served a year each as intern and resident at Montreal General Hospital, where he specialized in surgery, blood typing, and problems of transfusion.

Charles Drew began his pioneering work with blood plasma during his tenure as the first black surgical resident at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Because of his concern about the difficulties involved in transporting and correctly matching highly perishable blood, Drew took the preservation of blood's properties and the uses of plasma in postoperative work as his field of research. In 1940, Drew received a cablegram from Dr. John Beattie, then director of the research laboratories of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, asking him to secure five thousand ampules of dried plasma for transfusion, to be used for the ever-increasing numbers of wounded British citizens and soldiers. Within a short time, Drew had organized the Blood Transfusion Association to send plasma to Britain, and the crisis in war-torn England's hospitals was averted. A year later, Drew became medical director of the American Red Cross's blood-donor project, and it was largely thanks to his expertise that so many lives were saved during World War II. Drew left the Red Cross shortly after the organization ordered that all non-Caucasian blood be stored separately, and he returned to his former teaching position at Howard University and Freedmen's Hospital. In 1944, Drew received the NAACP's Spingarn Medal for his work on the British and American blood and plasma projects. On April 1, 1950, while on his way to a medical conference at Tuskegee, Drew was killed in an automobile accident in North Carolina.
