Hans Reichenbach (1891-1953) Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
Life The theory of relativity and a priori knowledge , in which Reichenbach criticized Kantian theory of synthetic a priori. In the following years he published three books on the philosophical meaning of the theory of relativity: Axiomatization of the theory of relativity From Copernicus to Einstein (1927) and The philosophy of space and time (1928); the last in a sense states logical positivism's view on the theory of relativity. In 1926 Reichenbach became a professor of philosophy of physics at the University at Berlin. His methods of teaching philosophy were something of a novelty; students found him easy to approach (this fact was uncommon in German universities); his courses were open to discussion and debate. In 1928 he founded the Berlin circle (named Die Gesellschaft fur empirische Philosophie, "Society for empirical philosophy"). Among the members of the Berlin circle were Carl Gustav Hempel, Richard von Mises, David Hilbert and Kurt Grelling. In 1930 Reichenbach and Carnap undertook the editorship of the journal Erkenntnis ("Knowledge").

Hans Reichenbach Planck Sommerfeld Hilbert and Cassirer were among his teachers. He contracted a severe illness on the Russian front during World War I. Only 5 people attended Einstein 's first course on relativity and Reichenbach was one of them. Appointed to a chair in Berlin in 1926 Reichenbach founded the Berlin school of logical positivism. he When Hitler came to power in 1933 he fled to Turkey and taught at Istanbul from 1933 to 1938. He emigrated to the USA and worked at the University of California. Reichenbach wrote on quantum mechanics , time, induction, probability and the philosophy of science. Among his works are Elements of Symbolic Logic (1947) and The Rise of Scientific Philosophy Article by: J J O'Connor and E F Robertson Click on this link to see a list of the Glossary entries for this page List of References (6 books/articles) Some Quotations Mathematicians born in the same country Other Web sites

    Berlin Circle
Erkenntnis edit by R. Carnap and H. Reichenbach, and organized several congresses on scientific philosophy, the first of which held in Prague in 1929. Members of Berlin Circle were particularly active in analyzing contemporary physics, especially the theory of relativity, and in developing the frequency interpretation of the probability. After the rise of Nazism, several of them emigrated from Germany. Reichenbach moved to Turkey in 1933 and to USA in 1938; Hempel to Belgium in 1934 and to USA in 1939; Grelling was killed in a concentration camp. Hence the Berlin Circle was dispersed. Hans Reichenbach One of the heavyweights of "hard-core" philosophy of science. He was born in Hamburg and studied in many universities in Germany, such as Stuttgart (Technische Hochshule), Berlin, Munich, Goettingen and Erlangen. After teaching at Istanbul for several years, he moved to University of California (Los Angeles) in 1938. On the heyday of logical empiricism, he edited Erkenntnis with Carnap. He made many important contributions to the philosophy of probability and induction, of quantum mechanics and other fields, but by far the most important is his philosophy of space, time and geometry. Drawing on Riemann, Helmholtz, Poincare, and Einstein, he advocated the coventionalist position, and he was also a powerful advocate of the causal theory of time-that time structure can be derived from causal structure together with conventional elements which he called "coordinative definitions". His view is maintained with some modifications by such philosophers as Gruenbaum, although there appeared many criticisms among younger generations of philosophers of science, such as Friedman or Earman.
