Hans Reichenbach Planck Sommerfeld Hilbert and Cassirer were among his teachers. He contracted a severe illness on the Russian front during World War I. Only 5 people attended Einstein 's first course on relativity and Reichenbach was one of them. Appointed to a chair in Berlin in 1926 Reichenbach founded the Berlin school of logical positivism. he When Hitler came to power in 1933 he fled to Turkey and taught at Istanbul from 1933 to 1938. He emigrated to the USA and worked at the University of California. Reichenbach wrote on quantum mechanics , time, induction, probability and the philosophy of science. Hans Reichenbach
Let us assume that the three dimensions of space are visualized in the customary fashion, and let us substitute a color for the fourth dimension. Every physical object is liable to changes in color as well as in position. An object might, for example, be capable of going through all shades from red through violet to blue. A physical reaction between any two bodies is possible only if they are close to each other in space as well as in color. Bodies of different colors would penetrate each other witout interference ... If we lock a number of flies into a red glass globe, they may yet escape: they may change their color from red to blue and are then able to penetrate the red globe.

Life The theory of relativity and a priori knowledge , in which Reichenbach criticized Kantian theory of synthetic a priori. In the following years he published three books on the philosophical meaning of the theory of relativity: Axiomatization of the theory of relativity From Copernicus to Einstein (1927) and The philosophy of space and time (1928); the last in a sense states logical positivism's view on the theory of relativity. In 1926 Reichenbach became a professor of philosophy of physics at the University at Berlin. His methods of teaching philosophy were something of a novelty; students found him easy to approach (this fact was uncommon in German universities); his courses were open to discussion and debate. In 1928 he founded the Berlin circle (named Die Gesellschaft fur empirische Philosophie, "Society for empirical philosophy"). Among the members of the Berlin circle were Carl Gustav Hempel, Richard von Mises, David Hilbert and Kurt Grelling. In 1930 Reichenbach and Carnap undertook the editorship of the journal Erkenntnis ("Knowledge").

    The Hans Reichenbach Collection
Hans Reichenbach was also born in 1891, in Hamburg. He studied engineering first but became increasingly interested in the theoretical aspects of science. This led him to study mathematics, physics, and philosophy, and in 1915 he received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen. After serving in the German army during the First World War, Reichenbach attended Einstein's lectures in Berlin, and in 1926 he received a faculty appointment there. During this time Reichenbach produced a series of works dealing with the problems of space and time as represented in the new physics. The best known of these is Philosophie der Raum-Zeit-Lehre Philosophy of Space and Time Reichenbach anticipated difficulties in German academia after the rise of National Socialism. In 1933 he accepted a five-year appointment at the University of Istanbul. Though isolated philosophically and scientifically in Turkey, there he produced his major work on the problem of induction, Wahrscheinlichkeitslehre Theory of Probability , 1935), and his major epistemological work, Experience and Prediction (1938). In 1938 Reichenbach emigrated to the United States, where he taught at UCLA until his death in 1953. In America he wrote
