Há quase 15 anos floresce o capitalismo-cassino. A relação entre produção real e finanças inverteu-se. Não é mais o crescimento dos mercados de consumo e de bens de investimento que determina o crescimento dos mercados financeiros, mas justamente o contrário: a pujança tornada autônoma do capital especulativo dita a conjuntura de indústria e serviços. Enquanto a economia mundial cresce por volta de 2% a 3%, o curso das ações sobe de 10 a 20 vezes mais -e isso numa progressão permanente. É claro que já tínhamos notícia de ondas de especulação, mas jamais numa tal magnitude e durante um período tão extenso. A bolha especulativamente inflada do capital sem lastro real na economia sempre estourava depois de alguns anos, com um grande craque financeiro; a grotesca "especulação das tulipas", em 1634-37 na Holanda, terminou com um desastre semelhante ao da alta das ações no surto industrial da "unificação alemã", de 1870-73, e do boom especulativo dos "roaring twenties", de 1924-29, cuja "sexta-feira negra", marcada por uma queda vertiginosa das ações de Wall Street, desencadeou, como se sabe, a maior crise econômica mundial até então. Dessa vez, porém, o grande craque financeiro parece tardar a vir. A quebra das bolsas, em 1987, foi tão incapaz de conter a alta global das ações quanto a contração do mercado de ações japonês em quase 50%, no início dos anos 90, e inúmeras "miniquebras", desde então. O crescimento do dinheiro superou em muito o crescimento industrial, sem que se seguisse, imediatamente, a pena da inflação. Essa constelação histórica única não se acha em nenhum manual. Uma alta "eterna", sem tendência inflacionária e com baixas taxas de juros, zomba de toda a lógica econômica, mas parece ter-se tornado realidade.

People spelled many words differently in the 1500s, so the sentence in Recorde's book is a little difficult to understand. Here is what Recorde wrote: "Also the rule of false position, with dyvers examples not onely vulgar, but some appertayning to the rule of Algebra." Robert Recorde studied and taught mathematics at both Oxford and Cambridge. He wrote books on arithmetic, geometry and astronomy. He is best known for inventing the equals symbol (=) which appears in his book The Whetstone of Witte in 1557. Just imagine trying to solve equations without an equals sign!
