Biography
Recorde was an able teacher, an author of important books, and one of the outstanding scholars of 16th Century Europe. Among his books that are of special interest for the computational tradition he founded are: The Ground of Artes This is an influential book on arithmetic in the English vernacular (rather than Latin) that explains both the “new” decimal arithmetic and the “ancient” abacus arithmetic The Pathway to Knowledge A version of the first four books of Euclid with an emphasis on algorithmic constructions.
The Whetstone of Witte This work is famous for the explicit invention of the equality sign thus making an account of algebra that was completely symbolic. Accounts of Recorde’s work are contained in most histories of mathematics. Some useful references are: "Robert Recorde", in Charles C Gillispie (ed), Dictionary of Scientific Biography, Volume 11, 338-339. Charles Scribner's Sons. 1981. Robert Recorde1510 - 1558 You can see one of Doctor Robert Recorde’s books in the museum in Tenby. Robert Recorde was born in Tenby in 1510 but not many people know much about him. His mother Rose was a daughter of Thomas Jones from Machynlleth and his father a Tudor Merchant in Tenby. Robert left Pembrokeshire when he was 15 for Oxford. He taught for a while before becoming a doctor to Edward 6th and Queen Mary. He was the perfect gentleman, a mathematician, qualified in medicine and Law. Robert Recorde was the first man to accept Copernicus’ ideas about the sun. Copernicus was from Poland, 1473 - 1543. He argued that the sun was the centre of the Solar system and that the earth and other planets rotated around the sun. Before Copernicus’ discovery everybody thought that the Earth stayed still and that all the other planets rotated around it. Copernicus was jailed for his discovery. Robert Recorde invented the = sign and also he was the first to discover the square root. He died in prison in London after being sent there for being in debt. Robert Recorde’s memorial can be found in St Mary’s Church in Tenby, one of Wales oldest churches.

Hertogenbosch, Uroningen, Haarlem, Maastricht, Middelburg and Utrecht. Town archives are for the most part well preserved. Printed inventories generally exist, and in some cases, e.g. at Doesburg, the archives contain information as to the relations between the Hanse and England in the 14th century. Dutch repositories have no administrative inter-connection. Each archivist reports yearly to the archivist-in-chief of the kingdom, and since 1878 these Verslagen omtrent Rifles oude Archieven have been printed. The English Public Record Office has four volumes of transcripts from Dutch archives. ITALYThe administration of the public records of the kingdom is attached to the Ministry of the Interior, for which office Signor Vazio published (1883) his Relazione sugli archivi di slab italiani. There are seventeen repositories, representing the ancient divisions of the kingdom. The most important are the following: Florence, containing records of the foreign correspondence of the dukes of Tuscany and the Florentine republic. Genoa, records of the republic. Milan. records of the duchy, in particular the registers called LArchivio Panigarola.

Silas Evans listed 82 people in his list of Welsh astronomers in Chapter 24, Seryddiaeth yng Nghymru , of his book Seryddiaeth a Seryddwyr (published by William Lewis Ltd., Cardiff, 1923). There is, naturally, a strong emphasis on amateur astronomers of the time of the book, but the list covers the entire period from the 16th century. The list of Welsh astronomers is presented here. Information such as dates of birth/death and main places of residence are given alongside the names: sometimes this information is taken from Seryddiaeth a Seryddwyr , sometimes it is additional.

    Robert Recorde
Robert Recorde (c. ) was a Welsh physician and mathematician . He introduced the "equals" sign (=). A member of a respectable family of Tenby, Wales, he entered the University of Oxford in about 1525, and was elected a fellow of All Souls' College in . Having adopted medicine as a profession, he went to the University of Cambridge to take the degree of M.D. in 1545. He afterwards returned to Oxford, where he publicly taught mathematics, as he had done prior to going to Cambridge. It appears that he afterwards went to London , and acted as physician to King Edward VI and to Queen Mary , to whom some of his books are dedicated. He was arrested for debt and died in the King's Bench prison, Southwark , in 1558. Recorde published several works upon mathematical subjects, chiefly in the form of dialogue between master and scholar, viz.:
    • The Grounde of Artes, teachings the Worke and Practise, of Arithmeticke, both in whole numbers and fractions The Pathway to Knowledge, containing the First Principles of Geometry ... bothe for the use of Instrumentes Geometricall and Astronomicall, and also for Projection of Plattes
