devoted most of his life to creating precision meteorological instruments. Fahrenheit invented the mercury thermometer in 1714, and later discovered the effect of pressure on the boiling point of liquids. Fahrenheit sought to create a practical temperature scale in which corresponded with the coldest temperature normally encountered in Western Europe and 100 corresponded to the hottest temperature. Fahrenheit initially created a temperature scale in which represented the temperature of a salt and ice mixture (at about 255 K), 30 represented the freezing point of water (273.15 K), and 90 representing the mean human body temperature (about 310 K). Fahrenheit later adjusted his temperature scale so that 32 represented the freezing point of water and 212 represented the boiling point of water (373.15 K). The Fahrenheit temperature scale is still used today in the United States and other backward places. In 1731

Memoirs and portraits of one hundred Glasgow men
J. Macquorn Rankine
Born in Edinburgh, 5 July 1820, Rankine pursued a career as a civil engineer. In 1842 published the first of upwards of 80 pamphlets. Much of his most significant work concerned the dynamical theory of heat and energy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts and in 1843 he became an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers. From 1844-48 he worked on the construction of the Clydesdale Junction Railway, and in 1855 was appointed Regius Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at Glasgow University. A major storm in 1856 led to his observations on the stability of chimneys. From 1864 he turned to waves and their action on ships and was appointed consulting engineer of the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland in 1865 and became a member of the Committee for Ships of War in 1870. THE records of the city of Glasgow present a picture of the many-sidedness of the Scottish character. Favoured as it has been and is with the presence and influence of a venerable University, not only has science dwelt and flourished there, but it has been fostered by and in turn has fostered the commercial enterprise and mechanical ingenuity of our citizens. The subject of this short memoir died at the comparatively early age of fifty-two, and yet by the sheer exercise and strict application of his natural gifts acquired a European reputation, and conferred fresh lustre on that University whose roll was already rich with the names of philosophers, mathematicians, classical scholars, physicians, and divines.

BASIC STEAM POWER PLANT - RANKINE CYCLE
Ideal Rankine Cycle
1-2: isentropic compression (pump)
2-3: isobaric heating (steam generator)
3-4: isentropic expansion (turbine)
4-1: isobaric cooling (condenser)
Equations for Ideal Rankine Cycle
Since velocities are kept low to minimize pressure losses, kinetic energy changes can be neglected. For the basic cycle, all components have one inlet and one outlet. Then the energy equation for each component can be written in terms of specific quantitites: h out - h in in q out in w out The cycle is usually defined in terms of the following properties and performances: Condenser pressure (P = P ) is specified.
Steam generator (boiler) pressure (P = P ) is specified.
State 1 (pump inlet) is saturated liquid, i.e., x
The temperature at the turbine inlet (T ) is specified.
The pumping process is isentropic, that is, s = s and q
Because the specific volume is approximately constant during this process, the change in enthalpy can be found from the following approximate equation: h - h = v (P - P ). (Watch units!)
