25. The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies Of The Apocalypse By Robert Rankin

D espite the fact that this novel is cleverly written with good measures of wit and satire, it was a strain to read. It would sit there on my desk, I'd read a little, throw it down and force myself back to it at a later date. Reading the entire book took approximately three weeks, such was its burdensome obligation.
This certainly isn't a book I'd choose from a bookshop myself. One look at the cover would have been enough to put me off and the contents, a macabre adventure in Toycity, left me wondering what it was supposed to be about. Political and social analogies may have lurked in the pages but I wasn't (or didn't want to be) astute enough to discern their existence let alone meaning.
Anyway, I don't like Toytown or Toycity stories, child or adult notwithstanding and inserting a lot of fairy tale characters only made it worse for me.

I now like beer even more than I did before. It has transformed itself in my mind from that cheapish stuff that you imbibe in order to get a little bit tipsy on a Friday night to an amber liquid of such purity that it should be used to baptise babies and be sought after like Arthurian knights do the Holy Grail. The way that Rankin eulogises the 'piss up' is horribly infectious and if his literary success increases even further then we should expect the membership of Alcoholics Anonymous to triple over the next few years. I'm already practicing the signature for my membership card. Indeed, this book does read as if it has been written by a drink-fuelled maniac but a maniac of such sparkling wit and eloquence that you would forgive them if they knocked your pint over and felt up your mum or knocked your mum over and felt up your pint for that matter.

27. Robert Rankin Interview
An interview taken by post in 1995 (probably).
http://www.the-snu.co.uk/rankin.html
Twenty Questions With Robert Rankin
This interview with Robert Rankin was done by post in 1995, just after the publication of Raiders of the Lost Car Park - I think, my memory's not what it used to be. Robert Rankin writes everything by hand and so his replies to our questions used -in places- a sort of shorthand which I've copied here to try and keep the feel of the way that he writes. 1. Compared to other writers you don't seem to give many interviews and I've never seen a book signing by you. Do you go out of your way to stay out of the public eye or am I just looking in the wrong places?
1) You're probably looking in the wrong places. I do a lot of signings nowadays - because Transworld try very hard to market my books and they're now selling enough to merit me going out and doing some. But I'm not altogether happy with the ethos of book signings - it's an hour's ego trip sandwiched between 2 4 hour train trips. You can reflect upon a lot of things as you stare out of a train window. Depressing things mostly, like who the Hell are all those millions of people? I do stay pretty clear of interviews, there is a finite limit to the number of ways you can answer the same question. There seems to be an infinite number of ways that you can be misquoted though.

Robert Rankin
His Holiness Robert Rankin
An appreciation by Michael Carroll
In his early days in Victorian London, Robert Rankin performed street magic alongside such greats as Bernard the Man-Cabbage and The Amazing Fabuloso of Penge. Robert's act often grabbed the attention of hundreds - sometimes even dozens - of passers-by. His most popular trick was most probably "sawing a plank in half", a feat of such incredible prestidigitation that no magician since has dared to perform it in public. Blessed with the power to heal the sick using only a hospital, and the power to return sight to the bland, Robert Rankin's reputation grew and grew. He gathered about himself a band of followers, men and women who gladly abandoned their professions and former lives to spread the word about him. They shouted his name from the rooftops, they circulated his name on Ye Internette, they posted posters in the post office, and by the turn of the century almost everyone in London had heard of this man who, they said, could perform miracles. Unfortunately, at the peak of his career Robert Rankin was cruelly struck down by a runaway offal cart - the first of many signs of his apotheosis, according to followers of The First Church of Rankin - and wasn't heard from again until his reincarnation in 1949 - the first of many signs of his deification, according to the followers of The Second Church of Rankin.

RANKIN, ROBERT (1753-1837). Revolutionary War veteran Robert Rankin was born in the colony of Virginia in 1753. He entered the service of the Continental Army in 1776 with the Third Regiment of the Virginia line and participated in the battles of Germantown, Brandywine, and Stony Point, as well as the siege of Charleston, where he was captured; he remained a prisoner of war until exchanged, at which time he received a promotion to lieutenant. On October 1, 1781, during a furlough, he married Margaret (Peggy) Berry in Frederick County, Virginia. He returned to active duty on October 15 and served until the war's end. Robert and Margaret Rankin had three daughters and seven sons, one of whom was Frederick Harrison Rankin. qv The family moved to Kentucky in 1784. In 1786 Rankin was named by the Virginia legislature as one of nine trustees for the newly established town of Washington, in Bourbon County (later Mason County), Kentucky. In 1792 he served as a delegate from Mason County to the Danville Convention, which drafted the first constitution of Kentucky. He also became an elector of the Kentucky Senate of 1792. The last mention of Rankin in Mason County, Kentucky, is in the 1800 census. The Rankins moved to Logan County, Kentucky, in 1802 and to the Tombigbee River in Mississippi Territory in 1811; the area of their home eventually became Washington County, Alabama. Four of the Rankin sons fought in the War of 1812. The family suffered a severe financial reversal around 1819-20, probably in conjunction with land speculation and the panic of 1819. In July 1828 Rankin first made an application for a pension for his Revolutionary War service.
