Grandes Economistas Frank Ramsey (1903 – 1930)
Cass (1965) y

Contact Us Philosopher of the Month August 2003 - Frank Ramsey Peter Cave Frank Plumpton Ramsey was a big man, big in body, in intellect and in breadth of interests - but small in life-span. He was born in 1903 and died in 1930, aged 26. Despite his short life - and the consequent small output of papers - Ramsey remains an influential figure, having left his mark not solely on philosophy (especially philosophical logic, probability theory and attempts to derive mathematics from logic), but also on economics and mathematics proper. Ramsey breathed Cambridge college life. His father was president of Magdalene and the young Ramsey studied at Trinity, became a fellow of King's and lectured in mathematics. His brother was to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Ramsey, as a student and young don, impressed G E Moore, the great economist John Maynard Keynes (despite demolishing his theory of probability) and - an unusual achievement here - even the anguished genius, Wittgenstein. Indeed, Wittgenstein writes, in Philosophical Investigations , how Ramsey helped him - to a degree he is hardly able to estimate - to realise earlier mistakes. It was the young Ramsey who, with C K Ogden, first translated Wittgenstein's

http://www.geocities.com/uqroo/ramsey.html

He was educated at Winchester College before returning to Cambridge to study mathematics at Trinity College He graduated as a Wrangler (the Cambridge terminology for one who obtains the first-class score on the final examination in mathematics). He died at the age of 26, ending a promising career too early. Ramsey's most celebrated contribution to mathematics is now known as Ramsey Theory , the branch of graph theory and combinatorics that deals with the idea that within a sufficiently large system, however disordered, there must be some order. One of the theorems proved by Ramsey in his 1930 paper On a problem of formal logic , which sparked the growth in this field, now bears his name (see Ramsey's theorem Further Ramsey, a good friend of economist

Jump to an honoree When tracing the lineage of the NBA's Sixth Man, it is important to begin with the player who first personified excellence coming off of the bench. Frank Ramsey was drafted as a junior eligible by the crafty Red Auerbach in 1953, a maneuver that would be used again - and again to great effect - in selecting Larry Bird in 1978. Auerbach would call on Ramsey time after time when the team needed a quick spark, and the confident, ever-ready reserve was always up to the task.
Ramsey joined the Boston Celtics after a highly successful collegiate career with his home state Kentucky Wildcats. While playing at UK for the legendary Adolph Rupp, Ramsey would twice be named All-American and also win a national championship (1951).

By: Michael D. McClellan Tuesday, August 13 th
Everybody knows the legend of Larry Bird – how he left home to win championships for the Boston Celtics and how he always raced back to French Lick as soon as that last game had been played. Everyone knows how Red Auerbach snatched Bird as a junior eligible, making it one of Red’s biggest heists of all time. And everyone knows how hard Bird worked, not only to improve his game, but in just about everything that he did.

    Frank Ramsey
    Question
I was talking to some LA LAKER fans about our favorite team (great to be back in play-offs against 76ers; it feels good) and I started my usual reminescences (sp?) about the first 6th man to strike fear into an opposing team when he came off the bench. Frank was instant offense long before the Microwave, and my question is:
Were his talents sufficient to get him into the NBA's Hall of Fame, or are those just us diehard Celtics Fans who cherish his memory? Answer Dear Bob, first of all let me tell you that it's a pleasure to find such competent fans, and indeed you are one of them, as your brilliant answer shows. Now, back to business... luckily, not only the diehard Celtic fan seem to have realized the importance of Frank Ramsey in the whole NBA history. He definitely set a standard of a cerebral player who was so humble to wait on the bench for his moment to come, and who was able to exploit it at its best with clutch plays which often granted success to his (and our)team. He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall Of Fame on May the 3rd, 1982, and is one of the 28 Celtics to accomplish the feat. And, to us Celtics fans, his #23 hanging from the rafters of the Fleet Center will always be keepsake of the pride of the ones who founded the legacy.
