1 Mathematics
The British philosopher Frank Plumpton Ramsey graduated in mathematics from Trinity College Cambridge in 1923, became a Fellow of King’s College in 1924 and a University Lecturer in Mathematics in 1926. In his short life he did work in mathematics and economics which created new branches of those subjects. But his vocation and greatest achievements were in philosophy, influenced by and influencing his Cambridge colleagues, especially Russell Wittgenstein and Keynes . His first major work, on ‘The Foundations of Mathematics’ (1925) (this can be found, as can all his other works cited in this entry, in Ramsey ( )), makes two key improvements to the attempted reduction of mathematics to logic in Whitehead and Russell ’s Principia Mathematica (see Logicism ). First, Ramsey tightens Principia ’s definition of mathematical propositions as purely general by requiring them also to be tautologies in the sense of Wittgenstein ’s Tractatus . Second, he shows that it need deal only with purely logical paradoxes, like that of the class of all classes which are not members of themselves, not semantic ones like ‘this is a lie’, which depend on the meanings of words like ‘lie’. This lets Ramsey simplify Principia ’s complex hierarchy of propositions, since it no longer needs to make ‘this is a lie’ ill-formed by making ‘

Frank Ramsey was a giant, not only due to his 110 kg distributed in 1.90 meters, but because whatever field of knowledge he studied he was able to make a contribution. Not just a simple contribution, but a seminal and pathbreaking one ! He was a mathematician by training, having graduated in Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1923 [with a first class degree in Part II of the Mathematics Tripos], when he was 20 years old.     His family  background reminds us of  Keynes's. As Keynes , he was born in Cambridge [22 February, 1903], he was also a son of a member of University of Cambridge , and professionally followed the footsteps of his father. His father, A.S.Ramsey, an eminent mathematician, was President of Magdalene College. Moreover, Ramsey is a Cambridge man in a sense that can be traced back to Isaac Newton : his precoce independence of thought  was fostered by the freedom of academic environment, and the tradition that undergraduate students were stimulated to try their own theories. This system is designed to form Generals, not soldiers.  Unlike the Napoleonic system implemented nowadays in all graduate schools of economics, this is a system that widens the differences among people, stressing independence of spirit, working against uniformization of thought. Obviously, this is a very unfair system, set to distinguish and reward only outstanding students.     He was a militant atheist, as his wife, Lettice Ramsey [nee Baker], described him. His younger brother, Michael, however, end up as

Frank Ramsey 's parents were Arthur Stanley Ramsey and Agnes Mary Wilson. Arthur Ramsey was President of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and a tutor in mathematics there. Frank was the oldest of his parents four children. He had one brother and two sisters and his brother Michael Ramsey went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Ramsey entered Winchester College in 1915 and from there he won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. He completed his secondary school education at Winchester in 1920 and he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, to study mathematics. At Cambridge, Ramsey became a senior scholar in 1921 and graduated as a Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos of 1923. After graduating, Ramsey went to Vienna for a short while, returning to Cambridge where he was elected a fellow of King's College Cambridge in 1924. It is worth noting that this was a most unusual occurrence, and in fact Ramsey was only the second person ever to be elected to a fellowship at King's College, not having previously studied at King's. In 1925 Ramsey married Lettice C Baker and they had two daughters. In 1926 he was appointed as a university lecturer in mathematics and he later became a Director of Studies in Mathematics at King's College. It was a short career, for sadly Ramsey died at the beginning of 1930. However, in the short time during which he lectured at Cambridge he had already established himself as an outstanding lecturer. Broadbent writes in [1]:-

Frank P. Ramsey British philosopher who died young but left many important ideas: the improvement of Russell's theory of types, the distinction between logical and semantic paradoxes, the subjective analysis of probability, the Ramsey-sentence for eliminating overt reference to theoretical entities, and the theory of truth. A logical paradox is such that a contradiction can be proved within a (axiomatic) system using logical concepts, inferences and definitions allowed within the system. Thus, Russell's paradox which uses the concept of set and its membership (which Ramsey regarded as a logical concept), the definition of "Russell set" (the set of every set such that it is not a member of itself; see Russell's picture ), and standard logic, is reconstructed as a logical paradox, according to Ramsey. A semantic paradox (Ramsey called "epistemological") involves extra terms in addition to the preceding. Thus the famous liar paradox which can be derived from the statement This statement is not true makes an essential use of the (semantic) predicate "true", so that it is not logical but semantic.
