Frank Plumpton Ramsey, 1903-1930.
The Cambridge philosopher Frank P. Ramsey died tragically at the age of 26. A wunderkind of first order, Ramsey had already written three important contributions to economics. The first, "Truth and Probability" (written in 1926, published 1931), was the first paper to lay out the theory of subjective probability and begin to axiomatize choice under (subjective) uncertainty , a task completed decades later by Bruno de Finetti and Leonard Savage . This was written "in opposition" to John Maynard Keynes 's own information-theoretic Treatise on Probability . Ramsey's second contribution was his theory of taxation (1927), generating the famous " Boiteux -Ramsey" pricing rule. Ramsey's third contribution was his exercise in determining optimal savings (1928), the famous " optimal growth " model what has since become known as the "Ramsey model" one of the earliest applications of the calculus of variations to economics. The young Ramsey helped in the translation of Ludwig Wittgenstein's notoriously difficult Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) - Ramsey was also among the first to review it and even served as the great philosopher's thesis supervisor at Cambridge. The gracious (if anachronistic) acknowledgement to Ramsey by Piero

Frank Ramsey 's parents were Arthur Stanley Ramsey and Agnes Mary Wilson. Arthur Ramsey was President of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and a tutor in mathematics there. Frank was the oldest of his parents four children. He had one brother and two sisters and his brother Michael Ramsey went on to become Archbishop of Canterbury. Ramsey entered Winchester College in 1915 and from there he won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. He completed his secondary school education at Winchester in 1920 and he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, to study mathematics. At Cambridge, Ramsey became a senior scholar in 1921 and graduated as a Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos of 1923. After graduating, Ramsey went to Vienna for a short while, returning to Cambridge where he was elected a fellow of King's College Cambridge in 1924. It is worth noting that this was a most unusual occurrence, and in fact Ramsey was only the second person ever to be elected to a fellowship at King's College, not having previously studied at King's. In 1925 Ramsey married Lettice C Baker and they had two daughters. In 1926 he was appointed as a university lecturer in mathematics and he later became a Director of Studies in Mathematics at King's College. It was a short career, for sadly Ramsey died at the beginning of 1930. However, in the short time during which he lectured at Cambridge he had already established himself as an outstanding lecturer. Broadbent writes in [1]:-

He died at the age of 26, ending a promising career too early. Ramsey's most celebrated contribution to mathematics is now known as Ramsey Theory , the branch of graph theory and combinatorics that deals with the idea that within a sufficiently large system, however disordered, there must be some order. One of the theorems proved by Ramsey in his 1930 paper On a problem of formal logic , which sparked the growth in this field, now bears his name (see Ramsey's theorem Further Ramsey, a good friend of economist

Frank Plumpton Ramsey (1903-1930), British mathematician and philosopher, best known for his work on the foundations of mathematics. But Ramsey also made remarkable contributions to epistemology, semantics, logic, philosophy of science, mathematics, statistics, probability and decision theory, economics and metaphysics.
1. Brief Biographical Sketch
Frank Plumpton Ramsey was born on February 22, 1903 and died at the age of 26 on January 19, 1930 . Ramsey suffered from a chronic and increasingly serious liver complaint, contracted jaundice after an operation and died at Guy’s Hospital in London Ramsey came from a distinguished Cambridge family. His father was a mathematician, and the President of Magdalene College. His brother, Michael Ramsey, became the Archbishop of Canterbury. And in 1924, at the age of twenty-one, Ramsey himself got a Fellowship at King’s College Cambridge, having graduating the year before as Cambridge ’s top mathematics student. Ramsey was very much a Cambridge thinker and his work is tinted by the work of his friends and colleagues among them Bertrand Russell, G. E. Moore, J. M. Keynes and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Few philosophers of the twentieth century have influenced the sciences as much as Ramsey. He did pioneering work in pure mathematics, logic, economics, statistics, probability theory, decision theory and cognitive psychology. He also did ground-breaking work on epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics and semantics. And he accomplished all this before the age of twenty-seven.
