Jesse Ramsden was apprenticed to a cloth maker, but at the age of 23 he chose to become an apprentice to a mathematical instrument maker. By the age of 27 he had his own business in London where he became acknowledged as the most skilful designer of mathematical, astronomical, surveying and navigational instruments in the 18 th Century. The French scientist N Cassegrain proposed a design of a reflecting telescope in 1672. It was Ramsden, however, 100 years later who found that this design reduces blurring of the image caused by the sphericity of the lenses or mirrors. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1786) and received the Copley Medal in 1795. Jesse Ramsden was an 18th century English designer and manufacturer of mathematical and astronomical instruments. He is best known for the design of a telescope and microscope eyepiece (ocular) still commonly used today and bearing his name. He also designed electrostatic machines.
Jesse Ramsden, the son of a Yorkshire innkeeper, was born on October 6, 1735. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to a cloth worker, but in the long run, the textile industry did not interest Ramsden. At the age of 23 he apprenticed himself to a mathematical instrument maker in London and in a very short time, Ramsden demonstrated that he was brilliant and skillful designer of instruments. In just four years, at the age of 27, he started his own business in London in the Haymarket, then moved to 199 Piccadilly in 1775, once his reputation had been established. Ramsden soon became acknowledged as the best designer and manufacturer of mathematical, astronomical, surveying and navigational instruments in England. A few years later he married Sarah Dollond, the youngest sister of Peter Dollond.
Ramsden's inventive genius led to the development of a new universal equatoreal, two new micrometers, and a new construction of eyeglasses. A telescopic eyepiece of his design is still used today. But his most important and well-known invention was a new engine for dividing mathematical instrument scales. Ramsden designed instruments of great accuracy. These included instruments to divide circles and straight lines, sextants, and vertical circles for astronomical observatories. By 1789 he and his workmen had constructed nearly a thousand sextants. He made important improvements in theodolites and transits, invented a pyrometer to measure thermal expension, and a device for determining telescopic powers. He also built barometers, manometers, assay balances, and other instruments.

Ramsden Observatory is located on Earth's Moon, in the center of Sinus Medii (literally "The Bay of the Center"), at Lunar geographical coordinates degrees North, degrees East. This location is the Moon's sub-terrestrial point ). The Observatory is named for the British mathematician Jesse Ramsden , who showed that Cassegrain's design for a reflecting telescope reduces the spherical aberration introduced by curved lenses and mirrors( Ramsden Observatory is owned and operated by the Intersettlement Geographic Society, the 23rd century descendant of the National Geographic Society that was founded on January 27, 1888, in the city of Washington DC, the capital of the old, pre-CEGA United States of America. Beginning in the late 21st century, the Society used the Observatory to monitor conditions on Earth during the 100 years of chaos commonly referred to as "The Fall." Today, the Ramsden Observatory continues to study the Earth from afar, under the watchful eyes of the Central Earth Government and Administration. The Observatory welcomes visitors with open arms; there is nothing more beautiful in the entire Solar System than the Homeworld hovering directly overhead!

Growing up on the farm Hunter, youngest of the ten children of John and Agnes Hunter, - the «Hunters of Hunterstown» - as the small settlement of Long Calderwood, near Glasgow, belonged to the Hunters. The house bears a tablet to the effect that he was born on February 13th, 1728. In his life-time the birthday was kept Februar 14th, on which date one drinks to his memory at the Royel College of Surgeons of England. This is a great example of a late 18th century telescope by the famous instrument maker Jesse Ramsden. He was born in Halifax in 1731 and he died in Brighton in 1800. All of his work is of the highest standard, which is evident when using this telescope. The achromatic objective lens is shown above in its brass surround. This unscrews using the knurled ring to allow access to the back of the glass for cleaning.
Ramsden employed over 50 men, but he was said to have undertaken the construction of the most delicate instruments himself.
The telescope is made of brass and mahogany. These were typical telescope making materials from the 18th century, especially for marine use. The photograph above shows the barrel, and the screws that attach the wood to the brass. At the front there are four screws, and at the opposite end of the barrel there are six screws.
Not only is this telescope in superb working order, it also has its original leather case. I believe that it is original as it fits so well and slides in and out very smoothly.
The eyepiece end of the telescope is shown in the two photographs above . The protective shutter rotates around a pivot and does not slide along straight tracks. The eyepiece design employed is known as the "Ramsden" as it was developed by Ramsden earlier in his life. A variation of Ramsden style eyepieces, the Kellner, is still used in telescopes today.

Born in Yorkshire, England, on October 6, 1735, Ramsden was the son of an innkeeper. As a young boy, Ramsden was apprenticed to a cloth worker, but in the long run, the textile industry did not interest him. At the age of 23 he apprenticed himself to a mathematical instrument maker and, in a very short time, Ramsden demonstrated that he was a brilliant and skillful designer of instruments. In just four years, he started his own business in London. Ramsden soon became acknowledged as the best designer and manufacturer of mathematical, astronomical, surveying and navigational instruments in England. Ramsden designed instruments of great accuracy, largely due to his invention of the dividing engine. Prior to his creation of the device, the division and inscription of scales on mathematical instruments was done by hand, but Ramsden's divider eliminated the risk of human error and made it feasible to inscribe lines accurate to a second of an arc. Due to the precision he could obtain, Ramsden's instruments were in great demand and he furnished achromatic telescopes equipped with accurately divided circles to many European observatories. Insisting on only the highest quality was problematic at times, however, since Ramsden had a reputation for completing the orders of his customers belatedly.

Teodolite equatoriale Un aspetto interessante dell'industria inglese produttrice di strumenti scientifici fu la comparsa, alla metà del Settecento, di grandi officine, che costruivano strumenti utilizzati in tutti i campi della ricerca scientifica. Scompare perciò la figura dell'artigiano, sostituita da quella dell'industriale e dell'operaio specializzato, mentre si differenziano le figure del tecnico e dello scienziato. Jesse Ramsden , (Salterhebble 1735 - Brighton 1800), fisico britannico e uno dei più importanti artigiani inglesi del sec. XVIII, fu attivo nei campi più disparati: costruttore di dispositivi di precisione, realizzò un micrometro filare utilizzato negli archi di misura dei sestanti e delle circonferenze geodetiche. Realizzò macchine a dividere e bilance di precisione , perfezionò strumenti ottici e teodoliti e costruì una macchina elettrostatica a strofinio. Divenne famoso soprattutto a partire dal 1770, quando cominciò a costruire strumenti astronomici.
L'Istituto Idrografico della Marina conserva un teodolite equatoriale da campagna prodotto dopo il 1780 dal Ramsden, che modificò un esemplare descritto dal Van Short nel 1749. E' uno strumento per osservazioni astronomiche, con montatura altazimutale ed equatoriale, che consente la misurazione dell'ascensione retta e della declinazione delle stelle.
