The Art of the Mapmaker Ptolemy's World Map, c.150 AD Psalter Map, c.1250 Dante Alighieri, Paradiso ... Further Reading This major British Library exhibition traced the West's response to the oldest intellectual challenge facing the human mind: what is the shape and the extent of the earth and of the cosmos which contains it? The problem has been the province of religion, poetry and myth, but in the western scientific tradition it resolved itself into the twin enterprises of mapping the earth and the heavens. The exhibition of more than one hundred maps, books and artefacts, drew on a thousand years of science and art. It showed the progress of scientific knowledge of the earth and the heavens, and also the ways in which art and symbolism have been used to make statements about man's relationship to his world and the mysteries of the universe.

My work is focused on collaborations with architects, art consultants, and interior designers to produce art pieces to commission for specific sites. All pieces are hand dyed and woven on an upright Dobby Loom and then stretched over wooden frames to give the woven cloth an architectural structure. The scale of work can be large or small and all levels of collaboration will be considered. My aim is to apply colour and form to a space in a clean structural way that brings warmth to the environment. Proceed to: c.v. gallery

This book ,finally translated into English language, has for centuries been missing in the live of English speaking people. The knowledge other Europeans had for many centuries about their early history has been virtually missing from the English speaking world, particularly the United States. One has to wonder ,why ? Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Ptolemy was a title taken by each of the rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty Ptolemy , one of Alexander the Great's generals, was appointed satrap of Egypt after Alexander's death in 323 BC. In 305 BC he declared himself King Ptolemy I, later known as "Soter" (saviour). The Egyptians soon accepted the Ptolemies as the successors to the pharaohs of independent Egypt. Ptolemy's family ruled Egypt until the Roman conquest of 30 BC. The dynastic history of Ptolemaic Egypt is very confusing, because all the male rulers of the dynasty took the name Ptolemy, and because many of them married their sisters, who were often called Cleopatra. The most famous member of the line was the last Ptolemaic queen, Cleopatra VII.

Tetrabiblos
Translated by F. E. Robbins In this treatise by the preeminent ancient astronomer, knowledge of the movement of the sun, moon, stars, and planets (studied in Ptolemy's Almagest ) is put to practical use: making predictions about individuals' lives and the outcome of human affairs. Tetrabiblos first examines the "possibility and usefulness of such prognostication" and then offers detailed instruction on the subject. Ptolemy's manual, written in the mid 2nd century, is a core text in the history of astrology.

Brief Biography
Claudius Ptolemaeus (A.D. circa 85 - circa 165), known in the English language as Ptolemy, was a Greek astronomer who lived in Alexandria in Egypt. Ptolemy was the author of the astronomical treatise which is now known as the Almagest (although that was not its original name). In this work he formulated a geocentric model of the solar system which remained the generally accepted model in the Western and Arab worlds for more than 1300 years. The Almagest also contains a star catalogue. Its list of 48 constellations is ancestral to the modern system of constellations, but unlike the modern system there were gaps between them. Ptolemy also wrote several other books. In his Geography he attempted to map the known world and describe its peoples, although the results are often very inaccurate due to the absence of reliable data and his willingness to identify ethnic groups based on hearsay and folklore. In his Optics , a work which survives only in a poor Arabic translation, he writes about properties of light, including reflection, refraction and colour. His other works include Planetary Hypothesis Planisphaerium and Analemma
Detailed Biography
Ptolemy's work as a geographer is discussed below. Their contributions to pure mathematics, however, require to be noticed here. Of these the chief is the foundation of trigonometry, plane and spherical, including the formation of a table of chords, which served the same purpose as our table of sines. This branch of mathematics was created by
