Jean-Victor Poncelet Poncelet, detail of a lithograph by Patout, 1849 By courtesy of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris Jean-Victor Poncelet born 1 st July 1788, Metz, France died 22 nd Dec 1867, Paris French mathematician and engineer who was one of the founders of modern projective geometry. Jean-Victor Poncelet was a pupil of Monge. As a lieutenant of engineers in 1812, he took part in Napoleon's Russian campaign, in which he was abandoned as dead at Krasnoy and imprisoned at Saratov. He returned to France in 1814. During his imprisonment Poncelet studied projective geometry and wrote , 2 vol. (1862-64; "Applications of Analysis and Geometry"). This work was originally planned as an introduction to his celebrated (1822; "Treatise on the Projective Properties of Figures"), for which Poncelet is regarded as one of the greatest projective geometers. His development of the pole and polar lines associated with conics led to the principle of duality and a dispute over priority for its discovery. His principle of continuity, a concept designed to add generality to synthetic geometry, led to the introduction of imaginary points. From 1815 to 1825 Poncelet was occupied with military engineering at Metz, and from 1825 to 1835 he was professor of mechanics at the

PONCELET JEAN VICTOR (1788-1867) Militaire et mathématicien français - né le 1er Juillet 1788 à Metz, Lorraine, France - décédé le 22 Décembre 1867 à Paris, France Dans son grand traité de géométrie projective, Poncelet étudie les propriétés des figures qui sont invariantes par projection centrale ; cette méthode apparaît comme étant un outil très efficace : elle permet à Poncelet d’établir les principales propriétés des coniques et des quadriques et de traiter la théorie des polygones. Il énonce aussi le " principe de continuité ", qui affirme que les propriétés d’une figure, invariantes par certaines transformations, ne sont pas modifiées lorsque la figure prend une position limite. À l’aide de ce principe, Poncelet est amené à considérer les points et droites qui disparaissent à l’infini ou deviennent imaginaires ; il élabore la théorie des transformations par polaires réciproques et le "principe de dualité". He was left for dead at Krasnoy and imprisoned until 1814 when he returned to France. During his imprisonment he studied projective geometry. He also wrote a treatise on analytic geometry From 1815 to 1825 he was a military engineer at Metz and from 1825 to 1835 professor of mechanics there. He applied mechanics to improve turbines and waterwheels more than doubling the efficiency of the waterwheel. Poncelet was one of the founders of modern projective geometry simultaneously discovered by Joseph Gergonne and Poncelet. His development of the pole and polar lines associated with conics led to the principle of duality. He also discovered circular points at infinity. He published in 1822 which is a study of those properties which remain invariant under projection. This work contains fundamental ideas of projective geometry such as the cross-ratio, perspective, involution and the circular points at infinity. While writing this book he consulted with
