The Random Walks of George Polya > Customer Review #1: George Polya and his times.
The Random Walks of George Polya > Customer Review #2: A prolific, versatile man who was also a mathematician

While George Polya is credited with coining the phrase "random walk", his journey through life was anything but random. Extremely influential in many areas of mathematics, his book, "How to Solve It" alone would have made a career. Like so many mathematical heavyweights of this century, his nationality was Hungarian. Given the number of mathematicians and their collective prolific output, Hungary must lead the world in per capita production of mathematical papers. Polyas first papers were published in 1912 and his last in 1987. The range of the work is just as impressive. Many concepts now considered standard mathematical fare were products of his genius. When reading this biography, you are struck by the features of human nature that he projects. Who else would talk about the list of the three nicest mathematicians that they ever met? Would anyone else dare to also talk about the three most unpleasant mathematicians that they ever encountered? His honesty when admitting that he was intimidated by John von Neumann show a level of humility that few people of his stature would ever acknowledge.

The Undergraduate Collection
The Undergraduate Collection was a collection of classical mathematics books covering the history of mathematics, assembled by Professor Halsey L. Royden and Rebecca Lasher Wesley in the late 1980's. Professor Donald E. Knuth recommended additional books in the mathematical and computer sciences. At the time, Prof. Royden felt that all students of mathematics should become familiar with these works before they left Stanford. They are shelved in the book stacks by call number, and may sometimes be identified by a narrow (not round) bright green strip on the book's spine.

  • ISBN: 0691023565 Book Description This perennial best seller was written by an eminent mathematician, but it is a book for the general reader on how to think straight in any field. In lucid and appealing prose, it shows how the mathematical method of demonstrating a proof or finding an unknown can be of help in attacking any problem that can be "reasoned" outfrom building a bridge to winning a game of anagrams. Generations of readers have relished G. Polya's deftindeed, brilliantinstructions on stripping away irrelevancies and going straight to the heart of the problem. Chapter 8: Roots and Radicals
Numbers in the Real World Polya Process
George Polya (1887-1985) was born in Hungary before moving to the US to teach at Brown University and Stanford University. Polya wrote many books and articles, including his well-known book: How to Solve It . You may have already heard of his problem-solving process in your math classes. His process involves four steps as listed below. He outlines numerous strategies for each step; some of which are also included below.
  • Understand the problem. Most people need to read the problem several times. You may need to rewrite the problem in your own words. What is the missing information that is needed? What information given is not needed? Devise a plan. Make a list of information provided. Make a list of information needed. Draw diagrams. Make a table. Guess and check. Look for a pattern. Work a similar, simpler problem. Compare this problem to known problem types. Carry out the plan. Work carefully. Do not skip steps. Show all your work. Review your solution. [Look back.]

  • UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM
    • First. You have to understand the problem. What is the unknown? What are the data? What is the condition? Is it possible to satisfy the condition? Is the condition sufficient to determine the unknown? Or is it insufficient? Or redundant? Or contradictory? Draw a figure. Introduce suitable notation. Separate the various parts of the condition. Can you write them down?

Series: Spectrum Alexanderson is successful in depicting the many facets of Pólya’s life and thought, masterfully weaving together anecdotes, articles, letters, photographs, book reviews and research problems...This book is easily accessible and requires no prior knowledge or appreciation of mathematics. At the same time it is a rich resource for serious students of mathematics...This is magnificent testament to the scientific legacy and versatility of George Pólya.. ––Manav Das in MAA Online In the first half of this charming book Gerald Alexanderson, presents a insightful portrait of George Pólya, the great teacher. In the second half of the book, Alexanderson assembles eight papers that describe Pólya's contribution to various fields. George Pólya enjoyed the esteem of the mathematical community not only for his deep and influential contributions in a variety of mathematical fields, but also for his groundbreaking work in the teaching of mathematics. His standing in the latter area could rest solely on his having written one of the most widely read books in mathematics, the still-popular How to Solve It.
