This book by Polya and Szego contains many wonderful gems of mathematics. The exercises are very interesting, and sometimes I pick the book up just for fun. I wish I had been able to purchase a hardcover copy. Unfortunately, it's only available in paperback. This book is suitable for mathematics graduate students.

This book shows you how simple concepts when applied properly can lead to ingenious solutions. For example, the author's proof of the Pythagorean Theorem will leave you shocked by its amazing elegance. And, there are several of these throughout the book.Read this book. It's money more than well spent.

Piet Hein The simple idea. To make simple things difficult is easy and requires only a confused mind or lack of thinking. To keep things simple, on the other hand, is hard and requires effort and imagination. Every child knows that questions come before answers, it is not the other way around. This does not happen every day: 'Vanessa,' she answered. 'What is your name,' he asked. However, this happens every day: 'To find the interest, you multiply the principal by the rate and by the number of days. Finally you divide by 100 and 360,' the teacher answers. 'How much interest will a capital of $4,500 earn in 190 days if the rate is 5%?' the teacher asks. There is something fundamentally wrong here. The teacher started with the answer and then raised the question. This is a simple article. It has only one idea. The idea has already been explained. Here it comes again:

    Study Habits
You may have heard by now that in order to do well in your university math studies, you should plan on about 15 hours of work outside of class. Keep in mind this is an average based past student experience with this course. Some of you will have to put in more than 15 hours per week in order to keep up with the class. This means that it is very important for you to make a work schedule for every hour you are awake, every day of the week! Time management is crucial for your success. Here are 10 additional points for you to consider in your quest for excellence:
    • Learn to listen for the key concepts in your lectures.
    • Study as soon after your lecture as possible. Your objective is to have all your homework done before the next lecture!
    • Study no more than an hour at a time. That is, try not to study three or four hours straight! Work no more than an hour, then take a ten or fifteen minute break, come back and study another hour, break, etc.
    • Study the subject you find most challenging first.

George Polya(1887-1985) is a famous mathematician, who get importance results in probability, analysis, number theory, geometry, combinatorics and mathematical physics. His book "How to Solve It" was probably the most significant contribution to heuristic since Descartes' Discourse on Method. In it he structured the problem-solving process into four stages:
    • Understanding the Problem Devising a Plan Carrying out the Plan Looking Back
For each stage George Polya supplied a series of questions that help to solve the problem. Some of them are:
    • What is the unknown? what are the data? Could you restate the problem? Is there a related problem that has been solved before?
More full list of questions can be found in http://www.math.utah.edu/~alfeld/math/polya.html . The examples in the book are drawn mostly from elementary math, but the method is quite general and applies to nearly every problem one might encounter. I read it when I was 15 years old and this was the only mathematical book that I really liked. It contains really amazing insights into problem solving skills. BTW it was George Polya, who said "There are many questions which fools can ask that wise men cannot answer." (See H. Eves Return to Mathematical Circles, Boston: Prindle, Weber and Schmidt, 1988).

    HOW TO SOLVE IT
UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM First. You have to understand the problem. What is the unknown? What are the data? What is the condition? Is it possible to satisfy the condition? Is the condition sufficient to determine the unknown? Or is it insufficient? Or redundant? Or contradictory? Draw a figure. Introduce suitable notation. Separate the various parts of the condition. Can you write them down? DEVISING A PLAN Second. Find the connection between the data and the unknown. You may be obliged to consider auxiliary problems if an immediate connection cannot be found. You should obtain eventually a plan of the solution. Have you seen it before? Or have you seen the same problem in a slightly different form? Do you know a related problem? Do you know a theorem that could be useful? Look at the unknown! And try to think of a familiar problem having the same or a similar unknown. Here is a problem related to yours and solved before. Could you use it? Could you use its result? Could you use its method? Should you introduce some auxiliary element in order to make its use possible?

    Book Description
This perennial best seller was written by an eminent mathematician, but it is a book for the general reader on how to think straight in any field. In lucid and appealing prose, it shows how the mathematical method of demonstrating a proof or finding an unknown can be of help in attacking any problem that can be "reasoned" outfrom building a bridge to winning a game of anagrams. Generations of readers have relished G. Polya's deftindeed, brilliantinstructions on stripping away irrelevancies and going straight to the heart of the problem.

Welcome to George Polya's Page. The purpose of this site is to present to you the work of one the best mathematicians of the twentieth century. His work is not to well known in elementary schools and I have to admit that Polya's Four Steps are a very good example of problem solving methodology in mathematics. George Polya was born Dec 13, 1887 in Budapest Hungary and died: Sept 7, 1985 in Palo Alto, California, USA. During his earlier years he enrolled in another subject that he eventually did not like, enrolling later in mathematics, his true passion. One of Polya's famous quotes is the following: "A great discovery solves a great problem but there is a grain of discovery in the solution of any problem. Your problem may be modest; but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive facilities, and if you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery."

George Polya , an American mathematician of Hungarian origin, was born in Budapest Hungary , on December 13 , and died in Palo Alto USA on September 7 He worked on a great variety of mathematical topics, including series number theory combinatorics , and probability In his later days, he spent considerable effort on trying to characterize the general methods that we use to solve problems, and to describe how problem-solving should be taught and learned. He wrote three book on the subject: How to Solve It Mathematics of Plausible Reasoning Volume I: Induction and Analogy in Mathematics , and Mathematics of Plausible Reasoning Volume II: Patterns of Plausible Reasoning In How to Solve It , Polya provides general heuristics for solving problems of all kinds, not simply mathematical ones. The book includes advice for teaching students mathematics and a mini-encyclopedia of heuristic terms. It was translated into several languages and has sold over a million copies. Russian physicist Zhores I. Alfyorov Nobel laureate in ) praised it, saying he was very pleased with Polya's famous book.
