Playfair, John Playfair, John, , Scottish mathematician, physicist, and geologist. He was educated at St. Andrews and Edinburgh and taught first mathematics and then physics and astronomy at the latter university. His Illustrations of the Huttonian Theory of the Earth (1802) elucidated the methods and principles of his friend James Hutton and established uniformitarianism as the foundation of the new science of geology. He also published texts on geometry, physics, and astronomy. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

PLAYFAIR, John PRESENTATION COPY Illustrations of the Huttonian theory of the earth. Edinburgh and London Printed for Cadell and Davies (London), and William Creech (Edinburgh) 1802 8vo., xx, 528 pp., With errata. Original blue boards, white paper spine reinforced with 2 strips of cloth, manuscript label, spine somewhat worn. An exquisite, uncut copy, presented to the astronomer William Herschel from the author, with Herschel's signature and stamp of his library; preserved in a folding clamshell box. First edition of this monumental work which in essence established the modern age of geology. Playfair believed, and rightly so, that his friend James Hutton's Theory of the Earth was the geological equivalent of Newton's Principia, but that it must be restated and elaborated on without its author's religious ideology and heavy prose. Playfair set out to discover what evidence existed in the earth itself that would shed light on the history of the planet, and sets forth his findings with an orderly, logical arrangement and remarkable precision: "...for precision of statement and felicity of language, it has no superior" (Geikie). A questi libri, che si occupavano della geometria piana, Playfair aggiunse tre nuovi libri ideati per completare i sei precedenti: Quadrature of the Circle and the Geometry of Solids Elements of Plane and Spherical Trigonometry e The Arithmetic of Sines .

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Project A competition winning project to link the Royal Scottish Academy with the National Gallery of Scotland, with a new Concourse Level under the existing Mound, in Edinburgh. The Mound is a World Heritage Site and the buildings themselves are Grade A Listed.
The new Concourse Level will provide a new shop, restaurant suite, lecture theatre and education rooms linking to both the existing Royal Scottish Academy and National Gallery buildings with two new public staircases and lifts. It will provide new IT exhibition space and additional plant areas to serve these as well as adding a new entrance, circulation and reception areas from Princes Gardens East.
Phase 1, consolidation of the existing RSA foundations, was completed prior to the competition in 2000; Phase 2, the conversation and refurbishment of the existing RSA building re-opens to the public in August 2003 with its first major exhibition: Monet The Seine and The Sea. Phase 2A, the new underground link and connection to the existing National Gallery of Scotland concurrently under construction with Phase 2 since October 2002 is due for completion in summer 2004.
Drawings of the Project exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2000 won two awards: The AJ Bovis Lend Lease Non Member’s Award and the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects Measured Drawing Prize. In September and October 2002, the scheme was exhibited at the 8th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura at the Venice Biennale in Italy.

    Two Buildings - One Vision
The Playfair Project is halfway through a five-year programme. It involves two existing buildings and two phases. These two buildings, essentially galleries, sit between two halves of Princes Street Gardens, between Old and New Towns. Phase One, started in 1999, opened early August with a Monet exhibition. Phase Two is already underway, in fact they were pouring the last slab as I visited site.
Phase One's staircase wraps Pouilleney limestone around a circular etched glass lift, without touching it. Within the lift you can look up through glazing to a conical light. This continues Playfair's theme of toplit galleries. The clean white fibrous-plastered cone with invisible glass framing is almost Turrellesque. Around the stairs a subtle stone-coloured Armorcoat adds patina. The stair nosing strips, floor dividers and handrails are all bronze. Movement is celebrated: down in the lower galleries the subtle arrival of the lift - through etched glass - can be seen via enfiladed rooms. The latter are connected by Sapelle mahogany (akin to black walnut) doors, normally open, set within the walls.

THE RESTORED ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY, EDINBURGH, PHASE ONE OF THE PLAYFAIR PROJECT, TO OPEN ON 6 AUGUST 2003
The restoration and linking of these two great 19th-century landmark buildings, designed by the architect William Henry Playfair, will give Scotland a major gallery space of international standing and will provide all of the National Galleries of Scotland with world-class education and access facilities. The RSA building will re-open with a major exhibition of Monet’s paintings, Monet: The Seine and the Sea, sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland. An international exhibition of this kind would not have been possible without the restoration of the RSA. There has long been a need for a dedicated, state-of-the art exhibition space in Scotland. The National Gallery lacks the facilities to host larger travelling exhibitions under its own roof and the RSA, which has the space, has been in urgent need of repair for many years. The 21st-century development of these Grade 1 listed buildings has been undertaken by award-winning architects John Miller and Partners. When work began in 1999, the first step was to shore up the foundations of the RSA with 350,000 litres of concrete.

New Software Can Strip Apple's DRM From iTunes Downloads
April 5th, 2004 As noted by Insanely Great Mac, a new application called PlayFair seems to crack Apple's FairPlay Digital Rights Management (DRM) scheme in a rather interesting way. PlayFair requires that you have purchased the Apple DRM track. It will not remove the DRM if you do not have a FairPlay decryption key on your system; one that you would have received with the legitimate purchase of your iTMS music. It's not clear if the PlayFair author purposefully put in the requirement of having a FairPlay key for moral reasons or for technical reasons. It's also not clear if keys are movable, i.e., would simply copying a key from one computer onto another allow PlayFair to decrypt iTMS FairPlay tracks? In addition, as of right now, the software is a command-line-only application that has to be compiled by the user. It's of note that most of the commonly used formats have been cracked . Jon Johansen, the author of DeCSS created a decryption tool enabling video extraction from DVDs. Also, QTFairUse allows users on Windows systems to bypass FairPlay's encryption by ripping a decrypted AAC stream from within QuickTime (see
