Piero della Francesca was one of the most original men of the renaissance. Piero had two passions - art and geometry - the very things that this course is dealing with. He carried these on at the same time and, we will try to show here, how he integrated the two. Luca Pacioli (c.1445-1517) was a renowned mathematician, captivating lecturer, teacher, prolific author, religious mystic, and acknowledged scholar in numerous fields. He was a link between the Early Renaissance of Piero and the High Renaissance of Leonardo. Leonardo (1452-1519) is considered by many the ultimate renaissance man, skilled in mathematics, philosophy, civil and military architecture, engineering, painting, sculpture, science, music, invention, and the design of weapons. We'll consider Leonardo in our next unit. These three Renaissance men were linked as student to teacher; Piero taught mathematics to Luca, and Luca taught Leonardo. They are also linked by the Platonic solids.

Borgo San Sepolcro. All his masterpieces were created in towns of central Italy, but early contact with the art of Florence proved decisive in Piero's development. In the Baptism of Christ (c. 1445; National Gall., London) he had already absorbed the Florentine theories of perspective and added his own acute perception of nature. He delighted in the play of mathematical ratios and painted The Flagellation of Christ (c. 1450; Urbino) in a measured, symmetrical manner. His most famous cycle, The Story of the True Cross Golden Legend. Particularly notable are the imposing portrayal of the Queen of Sheba, the stately array of battle scenes, and the stark night scene of the

Piero della Francesca (c1416-1492) was an Italian artist whose work was characterized by his interest in mathematics, particularly how it related to perspective and foreshortening. He wrote a treatise De prospectiva pingendi on how the rules of mathematical foreshortening could be applied to any object, be it a cube or human head. Most of his life was spent in Arezzo and his hometown, Borgo San Sepolcro in Umbria . He studied under Domenico Veneziano in Florence His work includes the Madonna della Misericordia (c.1445), The History of the True Cross (1452-66) painted in the church of San Francesco, Arezzo, the Flagellation (c.1460), and portraits of Federico II da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, the Duke and Duchess of Urbino (c.1472).

Dr. Kim H. Veltman Piero della Francesca and the Two Methods of Renaissance Perspective Introduction Piero's First Method Peiro's Second Method The Legitimate Construction ... Conclusions 1. Introduction Our study of the past depends in no small part on the tools at our disposal. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of a new attention to the theoretical sources of art. Critical in this regard was the monumental series Source Books for Art History and Art Technique Quellenschriften für Kunstgeschichte und Kunsttechnik ) edited by Eitelberger von Edelberg. This brought new editions of Alberti and Leonardo da Vinci as well as first editions of Filarete and Piero della Francesca. These editions led to new attention to details concerning the methods of Renaissance linear perspective. A series of mainly Austrian and German scholars: Ludwig, von Oettingen, Staigmüller and Janitschek drew attention to two different methods. Erwin Panofsky established the standard view of these two chief methods of Renaissance perspective: the legitimate construction ( costruzione legittima ) and the distance point construction ( Distanzpunktverfahren ). The first, he claimed was a theoretical method that began in Italy, whereas the distance point construction was a practical method that began in the North and did not come to Italy until 1583 with Danti's edition of Vignola's

Piero della Francesca's Story of the True Cross
F or some reason, "Piero," as he is simply known to all Italian art lovers, is not as famous as his near-contemporaries Michelangelo and Da Vinci. And yet during his lifetime he was considered one of the most illustrious Italian painters, and he was beloved of the 20th century's post-Impressionists and post-Cubists. The Story of the True Cross is the centerpiece of Piero's artistic production, and it is the only surviving monumental narrative cycle. It is also a wonderful example of how the Popes and Bishops used art to tell stories to their largely illiterate fold. The story in question here, gloriously frescoed behind the high altar of the Basilica of San Francesco, goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden, and can briefly be outlined as follows: W I t is likely that Piero took a decade to complete his masterpiece, executed sometime between 1452 and 1462. Each of the episodes in the story was depicted in a panel, and if you look carefully you can see a gradual change in style from the earlier stories to the later ones. Right about the same time, the Ottoman Turks recaptured Constantinople, and there was an immediate hue and cry - led by Piero's patrons Pope Pius II and Cardinal Bessarion - to begin a new crusade. It doesn't seem very likely that this fresco cycle, with its theme of saving the faith from destruction at the hands of the infidel, was commissioned by coincidence. Interestingly, it is said that the figure of Jonas, who tried to prevent the Cross's cruel destiny from playing out, was a self-portrait of the artist. An interesting footnote to the artist's life is that he died on October 12, 1492, just as Christopher Columbus was sighting the New World.
