Piero della Francesca
Piero della Francesca (1420?-92). One of the great artists of the early Italian Renaissance , Piero della Francesca painted religious works that are marked by their simple serenity and clarity. He was also interested in geometry and mathematics and was known for his contributions in these fields. Although the date and place of Piero della Francesca's birth are not definite, it seems likely that he was born in about 1420 in Sansepolcro, Italy. His father was a well-to-do tanner and shoemaker, and Piero's varied accomplishments indicate that he received a good education. He probably studied painting with one of several skilled artists of the Sienese school who lived in Sansepolcro. By 1439 Piero was working with Domenico Veneziano on frescoes for the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. His experience and contacts in Florence, where he would have seen the works of such sculptors, artists, and architects as Donatello, Brunelleschi, Masaccio, and Fra Angelico , had a profound influence on Piero's style. Piero was skilled in perspective, and his paintings are also known for the care with which he rendered the landscapes that provide the backgrounds for his figures. Throughout his life he maintained his ties with Sansepolcro, but he traveled widely.

- 1492) was an outstanding 15th century Renaissance artist , both a mathematician and a painter. His genius in developing the new methods of perspective and employing them in his paintings has withstood the centuries. However, his well-deserved mathematical reputation was lost and only has been regained in this century. That loss was largely due to the fact that Pacioli plagarized Piero's major writings shortly after Piero's death, incorporating them into his published books without attribution. For centuries, the mathematical contributions of Piero were questioned. However, three of Piero's mathematical manuscripts were discovered in the early 20th century, and his reputation regained. Piero is the first of a series of artists whose geometric explorations involved the gradual rediscovery of the Archimedean solids . He rediscovered the five Archimedean solids which are truncated Platonic solids : the truncated tetrahedron truncated octahedron truncated cube truncated dodecahedron , and truncated icosahedron . These were presumably known to Archimedes, but that was not known in Piero's time. In addition, he rediscovered the

    PIERO della FRANCESCA
    (b. 1416, Borgo San Sepolcro, d. 1492, Borgo San Sepolcro)
    Biography
Piero Della Francesca was an Italian painter of the first rank whose style was one of the most individual of the early Renaissance. Piero was born in Borgo San Sepolcro, a small city in southern Tuscany, around 1420. He appears to have studied art in Florence, but his career was spent in other cities, among them Rome, Urbino, Ferrara, Rimini, and Arezzo. He was strongly influenced by Masaccio and Domenico Veneziano. His solid, rounded figures are derived from Masaccio, while from Domenico he absorbed a predilection for delicate colors and scenes bathed in cool, clear daylight. To these influences he added an innate sense of order and clarity. He wrote treatises on solid geometry and on perspective, and his works reflect these interests. He conceived of the human figure as a volume in space, and the outlines of his subjects have the grace, abstraction, and precision of geometric drawings. Federigo da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza (1465, Uffizi, Florence) is one of his most famous works. The undisputed high point of his career was the series of large frescoes

Piero della Francesca , who came from a family of fairly prosperous merchants, is recognised as one of the most important painters of the Renaissance. In his own time he was also known as a highly competent mathematician. In his Lives of the most famous painters ... , Giorgio Vasari (1511 - 1572) says that Piero showed mathematical ability in his earliest youth and went on to write 'many' mathematical treatises. Of these, three are now known to survive. The titles by which they are known are: Abacus treatise (Trattato d'abaco) Short book on the five regular solids (Libellus de quinque corporibus regularibus) and On perspective for painting (De prospectiva pingendi) . Piero almost certainly wrote all three works in the vernacular (his native dialect was Tuscan), and all three are in the style associated with the tradition of 'practical mathematics', that is, they consist largely of series of worked examples, with rather little discursive text. The Abacus treatise is similar to works used for instructional purposes in 'Abacus schools'. It deals with arithmetic, starting with the use of fractions, and works through series of standard problems, then it turns to algebra, and works through similarly standard problems, then it turns to geometry and works through rather more problems than is standard before (without warning) coming up with some entirely original three-dimensional problems involving two of the 'Archimedean polyhedra' (those now known as the truncated tetrahedron and the
