THE CHANNING FAMILY Family tradition says that the first John Channing brought a silver coffee pot with him when he came in 1712. This coffee pot had this Coat of Arms on it. See GARVAGH (George Canning) in Burke's Peerage. JOHN(1) CHANNING , was born in Dorsetshire, England, on August 21, 1683. In June of 1712, he and MARY ANTRAM arrived in Boston. They were married in Boston, September 2, 1712. Shortly thereafter they arrived in Newport, RI, were he kept the Union Flagg Tavern. He died June 21, 1731 and she died May 16, 1741. Both were buried in Newport's Common Burial Ground. Their only known male heir was JOHN(2) CHANNING, born in Boston on December 17, 1714. On October 16, 1740 he married MARY CHALONER, the daughter of Ninyon Chaloner and Anne Tyrrell Brown(?). Mary was the widow of Dr. James Robinson by whom she had one child, Sara Ann, who married Caleb Gardner.
