Town of Pelham History Pelham is the oldest town in Westchester County. Thomas Pell signed a treaty in 1654 with the Siwanoy Indians to buy what is not only the Town of Pelham but is all of the borough of the Bronx and the land along Long Island Sound north to the Rye border and inland to the Bronx river. Pell named his manor "Pelham" in honor of his tutor, Pelham Burton. Thomas Pell's nephew, Sir John Pell, was the first of the Pells to live in Pelham Manor. He inherited the land in 1670 and until the American Revolution only the Pell family lived in Pelham.

Pell, Eve. The Big Chill: How the Reagan Administration, Corporate America, and Religious Conservatives Are Subverting Free Speech and the Public's Right to Know. Boston: Beacon Press, 1984. 269 pages.
Eve Pell is a West Coast journalist who writes for progressive publications. In this book she chronicles the anti-free speech climate of the early Reagan years, and how this has affected a broad spectrum of Americans. Her book has four main sections: 1) the federal government as censor (the Executive Order on Classification, Antileak Directive NSDD 84, the weakened FOIA, the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, the courts, and encroachments on science and high tech); 2) censorship in schools, libraries, and business (book banning and pornography censorship on the right and left); 3) libel (the use of libel law by the powerful to harass the weak); and 4) suppression of dissent (Senate Subcommittee on Security and Terrorism, unleashing the IRS and other agencies, and conservative public interest legal foundations). Pell performs a service by warning us that tolerance in America is on the decline, and accurate when she sees this as a problem on both the left and right, from the national government all the way to the local level. Eight years later the problem is more serious because of an ailing economy that decreases the choices we have, the increasing monopoly of the major media, and the deterioration of the educational system.

Tom Vilsack Don't Know (CBS) This article from The New Republic was written by Franklin Foer High school reunions are inherently unkind. But, for John Kerry, the fortieth gathering of the St. Paul's class of 1962 was particularly bad. The key episode took place in a Concord, New Hampshire, restaurant, not far from the school itself. Kerry wasn't at the dinner. That, however, didn't prevent him from looming over the evening. Toward the meal's end, the class president, a Boston lawyer named Lloyd Macdonald, rose to give a toast. He wanted to celebrate his classmates who had devoted their careers to public service. As he ticked off the names - FBI Director Robert Mueller; the State Department's top lawyer, Will Taft; federal Judge Alvin A. Schall - the sexagenarians bathed the room in loud applause. But, when Macdonald uttered the name of the junior senator from Massachusetts, the response was somewhat different. According to witnesses, only scattered boos broke the silence.

While in the U.S. House, John Conyers founded the Congressional Black Caucus. He presently is the Ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and belongs to the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights, Kappa Alpha Psi, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Conyers vice-chairs the National Advisory Council of the ACLU, and is the former vice-chair of Americans for Democratic Action. During his congressional career, Conyers ran twice unsuccessfully as a Detroit mayoral candidate in 1989 and again in 1993. He was one of 67 congresspeople in 1996 to speak out against and vote against the Defense of Marriage Act , authored by Representative Bob Barr (R-GA), which was passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton and supported by Vice-President Gore; the passage of this discriminatory law allows states to withhold marital rights from new residents if those new residents relocate from a state where same-sex marriages are recognized. He additionally cosponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 1996 , which would have prohibited job discrimination based on sexual orientation by federal employers, and was narrowly defeated in the U.S. Senate. Conyers also cosponsored the

The 9 acres upon which this mansion sits is part of what was once an empire of 9,000 acres owned by Connecticut physician, Thomas Pell. In 1654 he purchased the property from the Siwanoy Indians. In 1666 he received the King's Charter to create the Manor of Pelham. In 1675 Pell's nephew and heir built a manor house which was home to four generations of Pells until its destruction during the American Revolution. Ann Pell, daughter of the fourth Lord of the Manor, married her cousin of Huguenot descent, John Bartow, who acquired the property after the Revolution. The property changed hands a couple of times, ultimately to be owned by Robert Bartow, a grandson of John. New York City bought the mansion in 1888, and of more than a dozen architecturally important homes overlooking Long Island Sound, Bartow-Pell is the sole survivor. The newly restored three-story Carriage House contains a carriage stable, hay loft, and tack room for a multi-purpose interpretive facility for the museum. The neo-classic stone mansion is a masterpiece of architecture with its richly creative interior Greek Revival details and its elegant freestanding elliptical staircase. The 19th century Empire decor is an example of the finest quality found in New York homes at that time.

Foundation President, Dr George Pell
Dr George Pell In July, 2001, the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family will open its doors to the students of Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. The Institute will provide a full range of degrees, ranging from one-year graduate diplomas to higher research and course work degrees in the areas of marriage, family and bio-ethics.
Working in conjunction with the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies of Marriage and the Family around the world and with the University of Notre Dame in Perth, the Melbourne Institute will provide theological and pastoral training for priests and religious, teachers, catechists, pastoral workers, nurses and physicians, and lay people interested in deepening their understanding of the issues touching marriage, family and the culture of life in our world today. The Holy Father has made very clear his desire that the Melbourne Institute should serve not just Australia, but the Catholic population of the whole region. This goal is shared not only by myself, but also by the bishops of Australia.
The John Paul II Institute in Melbourne makes available to our region for the first time a superb body of expertise on marriage, family and bio-ethics. The Director of the Institute, Very Reverend Father Anthony Fisher, O.P., is himself internationally recognised as a leading expert in these areas and under his leadership the permanent faculty of the Institute will be complemented by visiting lecturers from Asia and the Pacific, Europe and the United States. In this way, the Melbourne Institute will serve our region as an important resource for the Church and the people she serves.

John Kerry, instead of giving us a Memorial Day break from all his bullshit, decided to use the occassion to rip Bush with this
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Democrat John Kerry ventured in to Republican leaning Virginia on Monday with a Memorial Day pitch targeting military families and a charge that President Bush "didn't learn the lessons of our generation in Vietnam."
Thank God for all of us that Bush did learn the lessons of Vietnam. Vietnam taught the American press that they can destroy American moral and the war effort. In addition, it taught the world that you don't have to beat the United States militarily, you just have to beat them in the press, which isn't too hard when the press is eager to portray the United States in the worst possible light. (i.e the Tet Offensive was a disaster for the Commies but thanks to the press, many to this day still think that it was a U.S. defeat)
Iraq=Vietnam? No way. But, if Kerry is elected, the aftermath might equal Cambodia.

Not long after Sen. Kerry's birth, his family returned home to Massachusetts. Insight on the News
July 26, 1999 by Eli Lehrer
On June 24, Mayor Timothy Idoni of New Rochelle, N.Y., presented William Rodman Pell III with a calf. Pell gets the calf because he's a descendent of Sir John Pell. Sir John, reports the Associated Press, or AP, sold 6,000 acres of his holdings in 1688 to French Huguenots who had fled from religious prosecution. That land now is New Rochelle. The cost of the land in 1688 was $11,625 and "one fatt calfe on every fouer and twentieth day of June yearly and every year forever, if demanded." "We are somewhat legally obligated," Idoni told the AP. Today, the event has become a party and family reunion for the Pell family which includes, among others, Democratic former senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island.

The genus Protorhus (Anacardiaceae) consists of one African species and fifteen Malagasy species. The morphological features that distinguish these two geographically segregated groups of taxa are so striking that many botanists have questioned their placement within the same genus. They differ mainly in style and fruit characteristics. In this study, morphological data as well as DNA sequence data from both the chloroplast and nuclear genomes (trnL, trnL-trnF spacer, ITS, ETS) were used to investigate the generic affinities of the species currently recognized in Protorhus . The data indicate that P. longifolia (Bern.) Engl., the African species, is far removed from the Malagasy species clade, which is sister to the genus Ozoroa Del. Because

However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newtonon whose physics he gave public lecturesas well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected booktwo on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin's own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject's work, 'digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived'. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term 'philosophy' broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.
