Allen, Jr. Rome NCR 's Vatican Correspondent John L. Allen Jr. interviewed Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia, March 11. Pell chairs the Vox Clara Committee, which advises the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Vatican's liturgical agency, on English translations. NCR : How did you come to be chair of Vox Clara? Pell: Very obviously, I was asked by the congregation whether I would consent to work on such a committee. I said yes, and I finished up chairing. Is liturgy something in which you had a particular interest? Well, you certainly couldn't describe me as a liturgist by any stretch of the imagination. Is liturgy a bit like war too important to be left to the liturgists? You said that, but that's nicely put. I did write my thesis on early church history, second and third century stuff, so I've got a very solid grasp of Latin. I had a long history of concern about the accuracy of the liturgical translations going back plus or minus 15 years. Given that one of the congregation's main concerns was fidelity to the Latin, it makes sense you would be someone to whom they would turn.

John Pell John Pell March 1 December 12 ), was an English mathematician He was born at Southwick in Sussex , where his father was minister. He was educated at Steyning, and entered Trinity College, Cambridge , at the age of thirteen. During his university career he became an accomplished linguist, and even before he took his M.A. degree (in 1630) corresponded with Henry Briggs and other mathematicians. His great reputation and the influence of Sir William Boswell, the English resident, with the states-general procured his election in 1643 to the chair of mathematics in Amsterdam , whence be removed in , on the invitation of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange , to Breda , where he remained till 1652. From to Pell acted as Oliver Cromwell 's political agent to the Protestant cantons of Switzerland . On his return to England he took orders and was appointed by King Charles II of England to the rectory of Fobbing in Essex . In he was presented by Bishop Gilbert Sheldon to the rectory of Laindon in the same county. His devotion to mathematical science seems to haye interfered with his advancement in the Church and with his private life. For a time he was confined as a debtor in the kings bench prison. He lived, on the invitation of Dr Whistler, for a short time in 1682 at the College of Physicians, but died at the house of Mr Cothorne, reader of the church of St Giles-in-the Fields. Many of Pell's manuscripts fell into the hands of Richard Busby , master of Westminster School , and afterwards came into the possession of the

Bush said last week he wants students who receive Pell Grant awards to use them within eight years to free up grant money for students pursuing math and science degrees. The Presidential Math and Science Scholars program, if approved by Congress, would provide $100 million to help approximately 20,000 low-income math and science students. The program would be funded by $50 million in private donations and $50 million from money saved by limiting the duration of a student Pell Grant award. A student receiving a Pell Grant to pay for a four-year degree would be limited to an eight-year award. A student pursuing a two-year degree could receive the grant for four years. "We want people to be prepared for the 21st century," Bush said in a speech to South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado, Ark. "We've just got to make sure people are prepared for the jobs."

Search the Web STORIES From SUSSEX John Pell of the School Book John Pell To Steyning's grammar school came John Pell. He married the daughter of the founder, but should be remembered in every school in England for his invention of the sign of division. Every time we make the sign for division we are unconsciously quoting John Pell, a mathematical genius who gave the world little more than this symbol. He was born at Southwick in 1611, and admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge, at 13. Study was a passion with him; he graduated B.A. at 17, became master of Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Italian, French, Spanish, and Dutch, and was famous as a mathematician. He was appointed by Cromwell Envoy to the Protestant Swiss Cantons, which it was desired to detach from France, and for six years be laboured without much success, returning to find Cromwell at the point of death. At the Restoration he was presented to the rectory of Fobbing, in Essex. Such was the benevolent simplicity of his character, however, that he was shamelessly imposed on by his tenants and relatives. He had a wife and eight children, but for all his talent and learning he had not enough practical wisdom to keep himself in comfort.
