Governor Ryan's speech

Blue Ribbon school has red-letter day

By Justin Kmitch Daily Herald Staff Writer
Posted on November 14, 2000 A select group of Peacock Middle officials and students stood in anticipation Tuesday, looking toward the sky. Waiting, wondering when he was going to get there and how long he was going to stay. No, they weren't waiting for Santa Claus. Instead they were awaiting the arrival of Gov. George Ryan in his helicopter, who was visiting Peacock "to see firsthand what this Blue Ribbon school is all about." Earlier this year, Peacock Middle became the second public middle school in DuPage County ever to be named to the U.S. Department of Education's coveted Blue Ribbon school list. State school officials named the Itasca Elementary District 10 Middle, along with nine other schools in Illinois, as award recipients. "It's a really cool feeling that the governor came to our school and recognized us," sixth-grader Laura Boeche said. "It shows that he cares about what we're doing." Once inside, Ryan and his entourage toured the school's new Video Broadcast Studio and the governor filmed a segment for the school's first television show to be aired when the studio is complete.

    The Peacock And The Crane
A PEACOCK spreading its gorgeous tail mocked a Crane that passed by, ridiculing the ashen hue of its plumage and saying, "I am robed, like a king, in gold and purple and all the colors of the rainbow; while you have not a bit of color on your wings." "True," replied the Crane; "but I soar to the heights of heaven and lift up my voice to the stars, while you walk below, like a cock, among the birds of the dunghill." Fine feathers don't make fine birds. This Online Literature Library is sponsored by Knowledge Matters Ltd.

    The Peacock And Juno
THE PEACOCK made complaint to Juno that, while the nightingale pleased every ear with his song, he himself no sooner opened his mouth than he became a laughingstock to all who heard him. The Goddess, to console him, said, "But you far excel in beauty and in size. The splendor of the emerald shines in your neck and you unfold a tail gorgeous with painted plumage." "But for what purpose have I," said the bird, "this dumb beauty so long as I am surpassed in song?' "The lot of each," replied Juno, "has been assigned by the will of the Fatesto thee, beauty; to the eagle, strength; to the nightingale, song; to the raven, favorable, and to the crow, unfavorable auguries. These are all contented with the endowments allotted to them." This Online Literature Library is sponsored by Knowledge Matters Ltd.

    Agassiz, Jean Louis [1807 - 1873]
Agassiz was a Swiss born geologist and zoologist. He emigrated to the United States in 1846 and was a professor of natural history at Harvard University from 1847-73. He developed the novel theory that a previous ice age once engulfed the entire surface of the earth and supposedly this ice age separated the two "creation events" of god. Determined to prove himself right, Agassiz spent time in the Amazon Basin trying to find proof that glaciers were once there. He was not successful.
    Influence
Charles Darwin and Louis Agassiz started a correspondence in the mid-1840's and soon became good friends. When Darwin was thinking about starting a comprehensive study of barnacles in 1846, Agassiz wrote to Darwin that such research was in great demand and he should by all means pursue it. Indeed, when Agassiz heard that Darwin was looking for different varieties of barnacles to study he sent him a huge crate full of specimens. When "Origin of Species" was published in 1859, Darwin sent Agassiz a complimentary 1st edition. Agassiz was not very impressed with Darwin's theory of natural selection, being convinced rather that each species was a separate divine creation ordained by god. During the late 1800's Agassiz became one of the most influential opponents of evolutionary theory in the United States.

Roster as of September 17, 1861
The following information was submitted by Tim Hashaw This is only one cavalry company and does not include infantry companies, battery companies, etc which also came from Houston County. The roster reflects only those names which started with the outfit in 1861 and does not include later recruits from Houston County as the war progressed. A company was expected to maintain full-size in the aftermath of casualties and there were a LOT of casualties and many new recruits in this regiment. If your veteran from this company is not llisted, it may be because they became a part of the unit later in the war. Four regiments accompanied Col Sibley in the New Mexico campaign:
    2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles
    4th Regiment Texas Mounted Vol
    5th Regiment Texas Mounted Vol
7th Texas Mounted Vol In addition to the Houston Co company with the 7th Texas Mounted Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, Houston County also supplied a company for the 4th Regiment, and a company for the 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Rifles.

Reviews Table of Contents From the Ishango Bone of central Africa and the Inca quipu of South America to the dawn of modern mathematics, The Crest of the Peacock makes it clear that human beings everywhere have been capable of advanced and innovative mathematical thinking. George Gheverghese Joseph takes us on a breathtaking multicultural tour of the roots and shoots of non-European mathematics. He shows us the deep influence the Egyptians and Babylonians had on the Greeks; the Arabs' major creative contributions; and the astounding range of successes of the great civilizations of India and China. This challenging and erudite book questions familiar assumptions and enlarges our sense of what we mean by mathematics. Reviews: "Enthralling. . . . After reading it, we cannot see the past in the same comforting haze of age-old stories, faithfully and uncritically retold from teacher to pupil down the years. . . . Invaluable for mathematics teachers at all levels." New Scientist "What is valuable here is the unified approach that Joseph brings . . . and the non-technical clarity that the attempt to reorder historical priorities and educate his readers out of their European prejudices requires."
