Pascal's ancestors were rich merchants that reached the highest ranks of the burgess class. His father, Martin Pascal was the receiver general of taxes at Clermont. He became secretary to the Queen. In 1586, Martin was granted the post of conseiller to the King, Treasurer of France, and General of the King's Finances in the Generality of Riom. He married Marguerite Pascal de Mons forming an alliance with another family of Pascal (of noble standing) and ensuring his children hereditary nobility.

Site maintained by Ireland's Trinity College features a biography of the famous French mathematician. From `A Short Account of the History of Mathematics' (4th edition, 1908) by W. W. Rouse Ball. Excerpt: Among the contemporaries of Descartes none displayed greater natural genius than Pascal, but his mathematical reputation rests more on what he might have done than on what he actually effected, as during a considerable part of his life he deemed it his duty to devote his whole time to religious exercises. Blaise Pascal Elements , a book which Pascal read with avidity and soon mastered.

He multiplied his mortifications, wore a cincture of nails which he drove into his flesh at the slightest thought of vanity, and to be more like Jesus God never abandon me!" Christianity alone affording the complete solution. Jesuit moral code, or rather the casuistry, first, by depicting a Jesuit who, through silly vanity, reveals to him the pretended secrets of the Jesuit policy, and then by direct invective against the Jesuits themselves. The most famous are the fourth, on sins of ignorance, and the thirteenth, on homicide. That Pascal intended this to be a useful work, his whole life bears witness, as do his deathbed declarations. His good faith cannot seriously be doubted, but some of his methods are more questionable. Without ever seriously altering his citations from the casuists, as he has sometimes been wrongfully accused of doing, he arranges them somewhat disingenously; he simplifies complicated questions excessively, and, in setting forth the solutions of the casuists sometimes lets his own bias interfere. But the gravest reproach against him is, first, that he unjustly blamed the Society of Jesus , attacking it exclusively, and attributing to it a desire to lower the Christian ideal and to soften down the moral code in the interest of its policy; then that he discredited casuistry itself by refusing to recognize its legitimacy or, in certain cases, its necessity, so that not only the

Blaise Pascal
1623 Clermond-Ferrand - 1662, Paris Blaise Pascal was the third of Etienne Pascal's children and his only son. Blaise's mother died when he was only three years old. In 1632 the Pascal family, Etienne and his four children, left Clermont and settled in Paris. Blaise Pascal's father had unorthodox educational views and decided to teach his son himself. Etienne Pascal decided that Blaise was not to study mathematics before the age of 15 and all mathematics texts were removed from their house. Blaise however, his curiosity raised by this, started to work on geometry himself at the age of 12. He discovered that the sum of the angles of a triangle are two right angles and, when his father found out, he relented and allowed Blaise a copy of Euclid. At the age of 14 Blaise Pascal started to accompany his father to Mersenne 's meetings. Mersenne belonged to the religious order of the Minims, and his cell in Paris was a frequent meeting place for Gassendi, Roberval, Carcavi, Auzout, Mydorge, Mylon, Desargues and others. Soon, certainly by the time he was 15, Blaise came to admire the work of Desargues. At the age of sixteen, Pascal presented a single piece of paper to one of Mersenne 's meetings in June 1639. It contained a number of projective geometry theorems, including Pascal's mystic hexagon.

Etienne-Pascal's dad is Louis Pepin; Louis is the son of Etienne PEPIN and wife Jeanne MACLURE Louis PEPIN's first wife was Marie-Catherine Germain. They married on 22 Oct 1792, in Yamaska county, Québec. Louis's second wife was Agathe ROCHE dit LaLancette, daughter of Jacques Rauques and Agathe Giguere. They married 25 Oct 1802, in Yamaska county. What is uncertain, at this point, is if the following 8 children are all Louis and Agathe's, or if some are Catherine's and some are Agathe's. Children of

the Search for Etienne I n my search, I learned about the fur trade; some of the first non-Native people on the west coast of North America were with the fur trade. At the time, the only fur trade I knew of was the Hudson's Bay Company, so I did a search and found that the HBC had a web site. After poking round for a while, I left a query on the Hudson Bay Company web site , asking if they had any record of an employee named Louis Seymour Peppan or his father-in-law Alfred John Houston. They didn't. However they did have two Pepin men who the archivist felt Seymour may have been connected with; one was Pierre Pepin dit Lachance the other was Etienne Pepin. There was so much info on Pierre that I took a good long look at him first. After finding some information on Pierre that said he had settled down in Oregon, I turned to Etienne. According to Etienne's employee record, he was in the right place at the right time, but as you can see from his employee record (reproduced below) it was woefully light on family information. PEPIN, Etienne
