We know nothing of Roger Paman 's date of birth, place of birth, or his parents. Almost all we know of him comes from information which he himself gives in the preface to, what appears to be, his only published book. Other details of the events in which he participated are known, however, so we can indirectly work out quite a few details using these other sources. Although there is no record of Paman being a student at the University of Cambridge, we know that Mr Frank of St John's College, Cambridge gave him a copy of George Berkeley 's The Analyst (1734). Paman wrote a paper on this treatise which he called The Harmony of the Ancient and Modern Geometry Asserted. This paper was communicated to several members of the Royal Society , and it kept circulating until 1739. On 18 September 1740 Paman set off with George Anson on his journey around the world. Eight ships set out from St Helen's but only one ship, the Centurion, succeeded in making the journey around the world. It returned to England, reaching Spithead on 15 June 1744 but, since Paman was back in England long before this, we know that he was not on board the Centurion. Five of the ships, the Gloucester, the Wager, the Tryal, the Anna and the Industry, were destroyed during the journey, three of them while rounding Cape Horn, so Paman was not on board any of these ships. We can therefore deduce that Paman must have been on one of the two remaining ships, either the Severn or the Pearl.

My name is John Haviland. I am professor of Linguistics and Anthropology at Reed College , and I am also a researcher at CIESAS Mexico . My work concentrates on Tzotzil (Mayan) speaking peasant cornfarmers from Zinacantán Chiapas Mexico , and on speakers of Guugu Yimithirr (Paman), especially at the Hopevale Aboriginal Community , near Cooktown, in northern Queensland Australia I am currently engaged in a multimedia study of the coordination of gesture, gaze, and speech (supported by a KDI initiative grant from the National Science Foundation), and in the creation of the Archivo de los Idiomas Indígenas de Chiapas , at CIESAS-Sureste, with support from CONACyT (México). (The most up-to-date version of this page should be available at the CIESAS-Sureste Home Page , but the connection may be slow.) If you will permit me, I should like to recommend my recent book, published in 1998: Old Man Fog and the Last Aborigines of Barrow Point , with Roger Hart, illustrated by the late Tulo Gordon. Some short "biographies"
In this paper I have mentioned a number of almost unknown mathematicians and other persons. Therefore I will give some biographical information here. For completeness, I also include the well-known ones. The sources I have used are referred to in parenthesis. George Anson (1697-1762) was an English admiral. Famous for his journey around the world 1740-44. M. P. for Hedon 1744-47. ( Apollonius of Perga (ca. 200 BC-ca. 100 BC) was a Greek mathematician. His famous work, The Conics , studied the conic sections in remarkable detail, and introduced the terms parabola, ellipse and hyperbola. ( Archimedes of Syracuse (287 BC-212 BC) was a Greek mathematician and inventor. His greatest contributions were in geometry. His most famous work was Measurement of the Circle Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was an English mathematician. Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and geometry at Gresham College. Became the first Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge in 1663. Teacher of Newton. Developed a method of determining tangents, and found a geometric version of the fundamental theorem of calculus. ( George Berkeley (1685-1753) was an Irish philosopher. He studied at the University of Dublin, and worked at Trinity College, Dublin 1707-12. In 1710 he published

The only changes I have made to the thesis are those necessary to transform the thesis from a printed paper to a html-document. Sadly, this means that any ambition of retaining the typographical peculiarities of Newton and others, had to go. I have also had to adopt the ascii-convention of writing x^n for x to the n th degree. I would like to note two papers, though: After completing this thesis, I was made aware of a paper written about Roger Paman some years ago at Monash University, Australia. I have not been able to locate this paper now, but will update this preface as soon as it resurfaces. Secondly; in 1999, Jarle Bø wrote a cand. scient thesis titled "Begrepsapparatet i britisk analyse på 1700-tallet" at University of Oslo. This thesis studies Roger Paman further.
